‘Chicago PD’ Star Marina Squerciati Relates to Kim Burgess as a ‘Working Mom’

Kim Burgess is a new mom on Chicago PD, and actress Marina Squerciati totally relates to her character’s struggle of being a working parent.

In season eight of Chicago PD, Kim Burgess adopted a young girl named Makayla. In the previous season, Makayla’s father killed her mother, grandmother, and uncle. And Makayla was left with no family. Burgess had recently suffered a miscarriage, and the pain was still raw. So she knew that she and Makayla needed each other. Because of that, the officer went through a long, dramatic, and grueling process of becoming Makayal’s legal guardian. And now, Burgess and Makayla are happily building a life together.

In a May interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Burgess actress Marina Squerciati opened up about the trials of being a working mother. She also has a young daughter at home. So she understands the difficult yet rewarding challenges that Burgess faced when she and Makayla became a family.

“It’s great as an actor because you don’t have all the tools at the beginning of an episode, right? And you’re unpacking your box and learning how to deal with each thing as it comes up,” said Squerciati. “… Also as a working mom myself, it’s this constant hustle of trying to do your job while trying to take care of your kid and earn a living at the same time.”

According to Squerciati, being a working mom is like a roller coaster. Sometimes, she thinks she’s “doing OK.” And other times, she thinks like she’s “not killing it.” And practically all working moms can relate to that.

‘Chicago PD’ Star Marina Squerciati Explains Why It’s ‘Impossible’ to Pick Up Roles Between Seasons

Marina Squerciati has been with Chicago PD since its very first episode. And unlike many stars, she doesn’t take on many other roles between seasons.

As she told Hello Magazine, there’s a good reason for that. Marina Squerciati puts her heart and soul into her character. So by the time her seasonal breaks roll around, she’s worn out. To be sure she’s back on her game for the following year, she needs to enjoy her down time.

“I love theater, and I was an apprentice at a festival called Williamstown. So when I started PD I had it all planned that I’d get a lead in the hiatus,” she said. “But it’s impossible. My whole cast is so amazing and we give so much that we’re exhausted, and at the end we need a break. Plus, it’s hard to find a project that fits that six to seven week window!”

“We all recharge in different ways,” she continued. “Vacation with family, and eat junk food and don’t go to the gym! That’s how I do it.”
