Last winter Chicago PD’s Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) made a major life decision. As the hit NBC series’s eighth season began to come to a close, Squerciati’s Kim Burgess decided to begin fostering a little girl.

This little girl had recently faced an unimaginable tragedy as her family was murdered, leaving her with very few options.

Burgess was happy to step in and foster the young girl, moving quickly with the choice and not really taking the time to consider what this decision could do to her regular life and career.

This, of course, was a decision that had the potential to alter the One Chicago officer’s life completely.

However, the character has found a way to balance all that she needs to in order to allow her home and family lives to work together in a positive way for all involved.

And this, the Kim Burgess actress says, is something mothers do each and every day.

“It’s just like what I do every day,” says Marina Squerciati the adjustment her Chicago PD character has made while becoming a foster mother.

“I may not be able to hang out with the cast because I’ve gotta go home and tuck somebody in,” the actress adds in a recent US Weekly interview. “You do the job the same, I just think you have less time to give people.”

‘Chicago PD’ Actress Discusses the Role Motherhood Plays On and Off Screen

While Squerciati assures Chicago PD fans that her new role will not take her away from her One Chicago responsibilities, there will likely be some evidence that she is balancing multiple roles at home and on the job.

“You just don’t look correct when you’re a new mom,” the actress quips during the interview.

Squerciati also notes that there is a chance fans of the popular NBC series may notice the character wears a little less makeup as the show progresses.

This, the actress says, is something she knows well since she is balancing similar roles in her own life.

“I was like, ‘Sweatpants and no makeup?’” Squerciati says recalling her own experience as a new mother.

“Very little goes into what happens when you’re a new mom, at least for me,” Squerciati continues. “God bless the women who can put effort into their face but I can’t.”

During the interview, Squeciati discusses one Chicago PD episode where her character, Kim Burgess has the opportunity to address these struggles with a coworker.

“I think Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) asks me, ‘How’s it going?’ And I’m like, ‘I love it.’” Squerciati explains.

“I don’t know that Marina would have said that,” the actress continues. “I’d be like, ‘It’s really hard. I love her, but it’s really hard.’ But Burgess seems to be taken to it very well!”

And, the actress notes, when she’s not on screen she is going full “mom-mode.”

“You should see what’s happening below hair and makeup,” Marina Squerciati says. “Sweats and slippers!”
