Rumors regarding an upcoming SyFy horror film reboot project have been swirling for some time. Now, horror fans are having a hard time containing their excitement as the first look of the much anticipated “The Slumber Party Massacre” reboot has finally arrived. The film will premiere on SyFy later this year.

Amy Holden Jones directed the original 1982 hit. The film has been a favorite among slasher film fans. The original “Slumber Party Massacre” follows a group of girls during a slumber party. Unbeknownst to the girls, a drill-wielding killer is about to turn their simple sleepover into a deadly bloodbath.

“The Slumber Party Massacre” was planned to draw more laughs than screams, according to Collider.com. Initially, the film was written as a parody of the slasher genre.

But once in production, the film turned into a straight horror film. But, as a result of this origin, the movie displays a lot more humor, both intended and unintended, than others of this genre.

“The Slumber Party Massacre” grossed over $3.5 million after its 1982 release. A pretty decent profit compared to the film’s reported $220,000 budget. While the film was not loved by critics, it inspired two sequels.

“Slumber Party Massacre II” was released in 1987. This film followed the original’s initial concept and became more of a satirical “black comedy.” The film grossed $1.3 million at the box office. Still a good profit compared to the sequel’s $500,000 budget. In 1990, the third film in the trilogy was released. “Slumber Party Massacre III” grossed a total of $1.2 million with a budget of only $350,000.

From Parody to Slasher, “The Slumber Party Massacre” Became a Cult-Favorite

After its release, the film received mostly negative reviews. However, longtime horror movie fans have turned the slasher hit into the cult classic it is today. So when news of a reboot hit, slasher fans were excited.

Talks of this upcoming reboot have been underway for a while, much to the delight of the film’s hardcore fans. One exciting part of the upcoming reboot is it keeping with tradition. The upcoming “Slumber Party Massacre” reboot follows the tradition of women-led production. The reboot will be directed by Danishka Esterhazy and written by Suzanne Keilly. Keilly is known for her work on “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” and “Warrior Nun.”

Little information has been released regarding the reboot, so horror film lovers are extra excited about the recent pic released depicting a scene from the long-awaited horror flick.

Bloody Disgusting shared the photo on Monday. The photo features a group of girls all looking out a window. The photo is simple. But for fans of the series, it’s a perfect teaser.
