In terms of CSI: Vegas, Paula Newsome says new head of the CSI crime lab Maxine Roby is a “closet rule breaker.”

“Maxine is a bit of a rule-breaker,” Newsome told Parade in a recent interview. “But she’s the only one who gets to do that!”

It’s true that Maxine is a bit of a CSI rebel; in the second episode, “Honeymoon in Vegas,” Maxine had to tell Sara and Grissom that they couldn’t work on the Hodges case anymore, as they were too close to the suspect. But, she managed to present the case as animal cruelty, due to the fact that they’d found a dead dog. This allowed Grissom to work on the case under that guise. So, Maxine is showing her sneaky side.

Newsome continued, “Other people can’t break the rules. It’s like, ‘Don’t you know the rules?’ But she is willing to bend the rules in order to make sure that the lab is protected. So, she’s a closet rule breaker.”

And protecting the lab is Maxine’s number one priority, according to Newsome. “When you’re a boss and something goes bad that you have no control over, that so desperately affects what you’re in charge of, it cuts very close,” said Newsome.

She went on to say that Maxine has dedicated her life to protecting the lab, and how that translates to the sabotage attempts in this story arc.

“It’s not about protecting David [Hodges],” Newsome said, “it’s about protecting her lab. That is her life’s work. That is Sara and Grissom’s life work.” Seems like Sara, Grissom, and Maxine are all on the same page when it comes to the work.

Recently, in episode three, Internal Affairs took the Hodges case elsewhere, and the CSI is no longer permitted to work on it. How will this affect the future of the crime lab? With someone still trying to undermine the lab, how will Maxine step up to protect her life’s work?

‘CSI: Vegas’: Paula Newsome Never Watched the Original Series

In an interesting turn of events, it seems like Paula Newsome had a lot of research to do before taking on the role of Maxine Roby; she revealed to Parade that she had never seen the original CSI.

“I have to say, I was living under a rock at that time,” Newsome confessed. “I didn’t watch it, I just didn’t get to it.” She stated that her sister was actually a huge fan of the show, and that she was more interested in Sara and Grissom coming back than the fact that her actual sister had a role on the show. Got to love your family, always supporting the right things.

Catch Paula Newsome as Maxine Roby, along with the original CSIs Sara Sidle and Gil Grissom, on CSI: Vegas. The show airs on CBS Wednesdays at 10.
