Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys QB, Says Brother Died by Suicide

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott opened up on his late brother’s suicide in a recent interview. His older brother, Jace Prescott, passed away earlier this year, on April 24, at the age of 31.

Prescott revealed that his brother’s cause of death was suicide in an interview with Graham Bensinger. It was previously reported that Prescott’s brother died. However, the cause was not known previous to the clip released on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old quarterback sat down alongside his brother, Tad, for the upcoming episode of In Depth with Graham Bensinger. The two Prescott brothers talked about Jace’s death and how they found out about him taking his own life. Dak said his father, Nathaniel, told him what happened. Tad then reveals in the interview that Jace shot himself.

“I mean, obviously tears and tears and tears,” Dak Prescott said of his initial reaction. “I mean, I sat there and tried to gather what had happened, and wanted to ask why for so many reasons. It was like this sense of all these emotions coming off of my back.”

Dak Prescott Gives Heartbreaking Interview

At times, the interview is heartbreaking to watch the two brothers talk about losing Jace. For example, during one segment Tad Prescott broke down saying he believes he failed his brother. In addition, he felt like he failed his late mother as well, who he promised that he would take care of his siblings. Jace was the primary caregiver of their mother, Peggy. Their mother fought colon cancer up until her death in 2013.

The Cowboys quarterback also opened up about struggling with depression earlier this year. Specifically, when the coronavirus pandemic first began in the United States.

“All throughout this quarantine and this offseason, I started experiencing emotions I’ve never felt before,” Prescott said. “Anxiety for the main one. And then, honestly, a couple of days before my brother passed, I would say I started experiencing depression. And to the point of, I didn’t want to work out anymore. I didn’t know necessarily what I was going through, to say the least, and hadn’t been sleeping at all.”

Prescott went on to reveal that after his first good night’s sleep of the year, he was told of his brother’s suicide.

The Pinehurst Police Department is still investigating Jace’s death, according to the Dallas News.

In related news, Dak and the Dallas Cowboys have made headlines recently for other off the field reasons. Dak helped Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have a change of heart over players kneeling during the national anthem.
