‘Deadliest Catch’: Everything to Know About Late Star Nick McGlashan

Back in December, Deadliest Catch fisherman Nick McGlashan passed away from a drug overdose, and the show is honoring him in this week’s episode.

Medical experts did not release McGlashan’s cause of death immediately. However, after further investigations, they were able to conclude the reason for the 33-year-old’s death. The Discovery Channel, which Deadliest Catch airs on, shared a statement on his death.

“Our deepest sympathy goes out to [Nick McGlashan’s] loved ones during this difficult time,” Discovery’s statement read, according to CNN. “Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great depth of knowledge. He also had a sharp sense of humor even in the most difficult conditions. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.”

The Alaska native was a 7th generation fisherman, according to his Discovery Go biography. Nick McGlashan worked as a deck boss, and appeared on the reality TV show since 2013. McGlashan’s father is longtime friends with Deadliest Catch‘s Wild Bill. The young angler started working with Bill a decade ago in 2011, and was like family to the boat captain.

“Nick is known for his witty quips, working through the pain, and not stopping the job until it’s done. He has also kept the boat running through all kinds of mechanical issues, manufacturing quick fixes on the fly. Nick has a wealth of fishing experience and, according to Captain Bill, is the epitome of a true crabber,” Nick McGlashan’s Discovery bio reads.

“Unfortunately, that has included an addiction to alcohol and drugs in the past, which got kicked him off the boat in Season 13 for a spell and landed him in rehab. Though he’s had his ups and downs, Nick has battled endlessly to stay sober and embrace a new sober lifestyle,” his bio reads.

‘Deadliest Catch’ Honors Nick McGlashan in New Episode

It’s been about six months since Nick McGlashan passed away. But Deadliest Catch will just now air some of the anglers’ candid reactions to his death. In this week’s episode, the cast finds out about their friend passing away in real-time.

PEOPLE got an exclusive sneak peek of the newest episode and relayed some of the crew members’ conversations. In one scene, a crew member receives “the weirdest text” letting him know that McGlashan had passed on. The news goes on to shock the rest of the crew.

“Wow,” Captain Johnathan Hillstrand says on the show, according to PEOPLE. “[Just] like that, Nick’s gone.”

“I’ve got text messages and words going around that Nick McGlashan passed away,” Captain Sig Hansen says. “Nick was a part of Summer Bay and pretty much every boat Bill [Wichrowski]’s been running lately. Bill, you know, treated him as family.”

“I couldn’t imagine what he’s going through right now,” Hansen adds. “But hopefully Bill will make this season happen, assuming he even comes up at all. I don’t know the status and where Bill’s head is at.”
