How Did The Pandemic Affect The Crew?

After the past year, it’s been difficult not to get caught up in thinking only about how the pandemic affected us. After all, it’s a global pandemic so people all over the world are struggling. The Deadliest Catch guys are no exception. Not only did they have to deal with treacherous weather conditions while filming, but they also had to figure out how to keep their business afloat (better pun?) during the pandemic. During a preview for the newest season, Captain Sig Hansen remarked on the conditions his team faced.

“What do you think guys, looking kind of empty isn’t it?” asked Hansen. “You know I’ve been coming up here for 42 years and I’ve never seen anything like this. People are scared. Fisheries are on the brink. And half the fleet is tied up in Seattle. But we still have to catch all our crab. If we fail, the fishery dies.

Hansen then detailed the type of crew he needed during one of the toughest seasons of Deadliest Catch he’s faced.

“We’re going to need everyone, guys who give it everything. Those who know how to channel their anger. The guys who know how to sacrifice. Those who have gotten knocked down but know how to get back up again…What we need are legends,” said Hansen. “It’s a tough year and now our fisheries are on the line. We fight for our survival, for our future. Crab fishery is the American dream and I’m not letting that slip away. But we got to be shoulder to shoulder or watch it all burn.”
