‘Deadliest Catch’: Why Sig Hansen Pushed for an Alliance Among Crews for Season 17

If you’re braving the frigid waters of the Bering Sea in order to bring home your quote of crab, it doesn’t hurt to have people you can rely on. That’s exactly what Sig Hansen was looking for during the latest season of the reality television series “Deadliest Catch.”

According to Nicki Swift, Hansen, who captains the F/V Northwestern, really pushed for the development of an alliance between the crews of the crab fishing boats sailing in those dangerous waters. He said he did so because of the difficulties facing all the fishing vessels during a difficult season.

This “Deadliest Catch” captain said he and his fellow crab fishermen went into the season without their usual summer survey. This survey is necessary for the work they do at sea.

“We didn’t have a survey to go by, the summer survey, so understanding that was key,” Sig Hansen also said. “And, you know, without a season this year, you’re looking at a potential two-year shutdown of the protocol. So we had a lot on the line this year, more than any.”

Captain Sig Hansen Said ‘Deadliest Catch’ Crews Typically ‘Lie to Each Other’

This “Deadliest Catch” captain said the fishermen have a history of keeping the truth from one another.

“Well, I mean, you know, we used to work together when we were younger because you have so much more participants, you have more grouping, but you’re more secretive, you know, because you’re just gonna lie to each other, just the way it is,” Sig Hansen also said.

Hansen said he was surprised that the “Deadliest Catch” fishermen would even consider forming an alliance.

“So the fact that the guys were even entertaining the thought to group up, to do that is, I don’t know man, that’s a long shot. If I was a betting man, I wouldn’t have bet on it, put it that way, but I think they understood the, you know, the risk that we were facing which was literally no season at all,” Hansen also shared.

If you’re wanting to watch Sig Hansen in action, a recent episode of “Deadliest Catch” shows him doing “exciting” work. But, he doesn’t do it alone. His daughter, Mandy, is there with him on the F/V Northwestern. The show recently shared a clip of this father-daughter team on social media.

Sig Hansen also told Nicki Swift that his future plans call for Mandy to take over the F/V Northwestern. “She’s been fast-tracked. … I’m thinking to myself, ‘Look into this,’ and the big picture is you take over the chair, so to speak. Then, let’s get you going on it, and knowledge is power, and I think the more experience she has there, the better off we are as a family entity, and that’s just, you know, there’s no animosity with the group about that,” Hansen shared.
