Debra Messing and fans are not happy that the “Will and Grace” star wasn’t cast as Lucille Ball in an upcoming project. Instead, the role went to Nicole Kidman.

Javier Bardem will be the Desi Arnaz to Kidman’s Lucy in the Amazon movie, which is titled “Being the Ricardos.” Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing the film.

According to PopCulture.com, Debra Messing believed she was the ideal candidate for the role. She was disappointed to lose out. Messing reportedly retweeted a fan who wrote: “[Debra Messing] is a better comedian. My opinion…. .” This wasn’t the only time Messing expressed her feelings on Twitter.

She also replied to a tweet from another fan supportive of her playing the legendary comedian. This fan said he hoped Messing had committed to another project and unavailable for filming “Being the Ricardos.” That wasn’t the case, according to Messing. “On no, I’m available,” she said in response.

Another Debra Messing supporter argued that Kidman has enough roles. “Nicole got enough d— jobs. She on everything HBO has. Let someone else eat. Debra would smash this,” the fan wrote.

Debra Messing Plays Lucy on ‘Will and Grace’

The push for Debra Messing to play the role comes in part from her successful portrayal of Lucy during a special episode of “Will and Grace.” According to PopCulture, Lucie Arnaz was particularly moved by Messing in costume as her mother.

“I was in the green dress. We were about to shoot the song and dance [number] and she walked in and she just looked at me and didn’t say anything,” Messing said. “Then she hugged me and she said, ‘This feels really good. It’s been a long time since I’ve hugged you,’ and everyone started to cry.”

Messing continued by adding: “Then she smiled and she said, ‘I know how long you’ve been wanting to do this, Debra. And I’m so glad we were able to make it happen.’ And then I had to go [to the stage]. As I walked away, she said, ‘Break a leg, Mom.’ everybody just flipped out and cried. It was really moving.”

Some fans have also been unhappy with the casting of Bardem as Desi. Bardem was born in Las Palmas, Spain. Arnaz was born in Cuba. Fans were hoping to see a Cuba-born actor portray Arnaz in order to have a more accurate representation of him and his background. This, according to some fans, is just another case of Hollywood not having enough Latinx representation.

“Being the Ricardos” reportedly takes place over one week in the lives of Ball and Arnaz. The legendary television stars are working on an episode of “I Love Lucy. ” At the same time, they are dealing with a crisis that is threatening their careers and marriage. Serving as two of the executive producers on the film are Ball’s and Arnaz’s children, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Lucie Arnaz.
