Following the return of his beloved Dexter character, David Zayas is now opening up about Angel Batista’s hunt for the truth on the spin-off series Dexter: New Blood.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Dexter star was asked if he wanted Batista to find out who exactly Dexter really is or if it’s best that he never finds out. “That’s a difficult question to answer,” Zayas admitted. “But I guess I’m going to say that ultimately truth is going to set you free. So I would say yes.”
Also when asked about his reaction to Dexter coming back, Zaya declared he was actually surprised. “After the first few years when they didn’t reprise the show after the 2013 finale], I just figured that was it. SO when I heard about this, I was very surprised.”
According to IMDb, Dexter: New Blood takes place 10 years after Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall) went missing post-Hurricane Laura. The former coroner and serial killer is now living under an assumed name in Upstate New York. Hall has returned to reprise his role along with Jennifer Carpenter. Others starring in the new series are Julia Jones, Jack Alcott, Johnny Sequoyah, and Alano Miller.
David Zayas Talks Returning as Batista on ‘Dexter: New Blood’
While continuing to chat with Entertainment Weekly, David Zayas opened up about saying goodbye to his Dexter character in the original series. “There are always mixed feelings, right? I felt it might’ve been a little underwhelming,” Zayas admitted. “You always want to do more and you always want to be involved more.”
The Dexter star also stated he didn’t have as much of a problem with the ending as a lot of people did. “Simply because I thought there was a chance that we could come back. It’s almost like it was left like that on purpose so we could come back.”
When asked how excited he was to return for Dexter: New Blood, Zayas said, “I’m always giddy whenever I get a job! There were a lot of emotions that went into it. But overall I was extremely happy that I was asked to be a part of this reboot. Even if it’s in a small capacity.”
While also talking about Batista’s signature fedora, Zayas shared, “I like the look. Because [Dexter] was in Miami and I’m Puerto Rican. I have a lot of uncles with hats like that. Yeah. Very Stylized I wanted to put that into this character.”
In regards to what Dexter: New Blood fans can expect from the return of now Captain Batista, Zayas went on to add, “You’re going to have to wait and see!”
