The pieces are moving on the chess board that is “Dexter: New Blood,” and Dexter Morgan isn’t quite the king in this situation. More like a rook who took a pawn and now all hell is breaking loose around it. In the first episode, Dexter went back to his old ways, killing Matt Caldwell. He, of course, is the Iron Lake mayor’s son, who killed 5 people and got of scot-free. The police swarm Dexter’s cabin but don’t suspect him, for the time being. He’s rusty, but it looks like he’s going to get away with this one. Unless, Kurt Caldwell, Iron Lake mayor, throws a wrench into the plan.

See, Kurt Caldwell claimed, while drunk, that he’d FaceTimed with his son Matt recently. Of course, that can’t be true, because Dexter killed Matt. But Kurt is so adamant that his son is alive. It’s an obvious lie; but what does this mean for Dexter?

He’s most likely going to take things into his own hands and investigate Kurt. What we know is that there’s the possibility of another killer in Iron Lake besides Dexter. Potentially, Kurt wants the police to believe his son is alive so they’ll call off the search and they won’t find his burial grounds. Maybe Kurt is the other killer?

It could be a stretch, or it could be right on the money. There’s currently a missing person problem in Iron Lake; someone is kidnapping women, spying on them, and victimizing them. It’s not Dexter, because he doesn’t kill innocent people. Something else is lurking in Iron Lake.

‘Dexter: New Blood’: Why Did Kurt Lie About His Son?

That’s the question, isn’t it? Did he do it out of grief, in order to hang on to a part of his son and deny that he’s actually gone? Or is it more nefarious?

Dexter recently moved and burned Matt’s body, so there’s no way he’s alive. We know this, Dexter knows this. We’re only 3 episodes into the miniseries, so there’s no way he’s anywhere close to finding out who the other killer is. We can only speculate and theorize.

So, what will Dexter find out about Kurt? Some of his secrets could come out little by little as the series progresses. He might focus his energy on Kurt, and slowly revealing his dark deeds. So far, Kurt seems like the kind of guy to have secrets. We know he has power in the community, but is he abusing that power and using it against his citizens?

Dexter is going to have a lot on his plate in the rest of the series; another killer in Iron Lake, making sure no one suspects him, dealing with his son Harrison coming back, and now Kurt Caldwell telling an obvious lie.
