“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end.” The family of late rap icon DMX has released a poignant statement for fans just hours after his death.

Following DMX’s tragic struggle on life support, the music legend – born Earl Simmons – died Friday, April 9 at White Plains Hospital in New York. Simmons was surrounded by his entire family for his last hours, while fans and friends held a vigil outside his place of passing for most of his last week of life.

Now, the family of Earl “DMX” Simmons has released a full statement for fans in light of his passing. The moving statement celebrates the family man and rap icon in full, alongside asking his fans to “please respect” the family’s privacy as they “grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle, and the man the world knew as DMX.”

The statement is shared Friday by fellow hip hop legend DJ Akademiks on Twitter. It reads as follows:

DMX: The Death of an Icon

The tragic loss of one of music’s most prolific icons comes after Simmons suffered a heart attack due to an alleged drug overdose over the weekend. Unfortunately, DMX’s recovery afterward was “near impossible.”

DMX was with “little brain activity” and remained on life support for a week afterward.

In the week leading up to his death, celebrity trade TMZ cites family sources saying the rapper was without the oxygen his brain would require for “nearly 30 minutes” after his overdose and resulting heart attack.

Late last Saturday afternoon, a representative of DMX’s family released their first statement that read:

“Last night, Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home. At this time, he remains in ICU in critical condition. Earl has been a warrior his entire life. This situation represents yet another road he must conquer.”

“The Simmons Family appreciates the overwhelming outpouring of heartfelt love, encouragement, support, and prayers for Earl,” the family statement adds. “Earl is someone whose life and music have been a source of inspiration and strength to so many people around the world.  It is reassuring to see his fans return that same passion and energy to him during his time of need.”

All our best to DMX’s family, friends, and fans during this truly tragic loss. RIP to a legend.
