Legendary musical artist Dolly Parton recently sat down with country singer Gabby Barrett for a one-on-one talk sponsored by Amazon Music.

The two country artists sat down together to celebrate the release of Gabby Barrett’s version of “I Will Always Love You.” Barrett asked Parton questions like how her upbringing influenced her songwriting, and why Parton thinks “Jolene” has been covered hundreds of times. However, Barrett also received some valuable marriage advice from Parton.

The two musicians spoke through an online video chat with Parton also sharing her thoughts on life, love and all things music. When Barrett wasn’t picking Parton’s brain for career tips, she asked the icon for advice on maintaining a happy, long-lasting marriage.

Parton would know since she’s been married to her husband, Carl Dean, and still going strong after 54 years together. Parton has mentioned before how different the pair are from one another, even going as far as saying her husband doesn’t care for her music. Yet, the relationship works because they have respect for each other’s differences.

“He’s pretty much a loner and a homebody, and I’m a gypsy. But when I’m home, I love that,” said Parton. “We don’t do the same thing so it gives us different stuff to talk about. He doesn’t get involved in my business, and I don’t in his. So we have our own little world that we create for ourselves.”

Parton went on to say that the couple have “never fought.” However, that doesn’t mean maintaining a healthy relationship comes easily all the time.

“You have to work at anything. Marriage is a business, too, and you got to look at it like that,” Parton continued. “You got to make the right decisions for all the little things that come up.”

Last year, Barrett married fellow country singer Cade Foehner. The couple are expecting their first child, a daughter, early next year.

You can listen to Gabby Barrett’s “I Will Always Love You” on Amazon Music.

And Dolly fans don’t have to wait long for a new album. Parton is releasing a Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas, just in time for the holidays.
