Dwayne Johnson Talks ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Sequel Storyline

Dwayne Johnson has played many memorable characters during his wildly successful acting career. One of the characters that stands out from the rest is Luke Hobbs in the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Hobbs, of course, first appeared in that beloved film universe in the film “Fast Five” in 2011. The character was so popular that he – and Deckard Shaw (played by Jason Statham) – received their own spinoff. That film was the appropriately titled movie, “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.”

With Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as the leads of the film, it’s no wonder that the spinoff was a major box office success. It earned more than $750 million across the globe following its release in 2019, according to Collider.

That film’s success has made a sequel to “Hobbs & Shaw” a possibility. And, based on what Johnson recently shared, he has a storyline in mind for that sequel. It might surprise some fans to learn that what Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hopes to do with the sequel is very different from the usual style of the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Unsurprisingly, the idea of bringing a “Hobbs & Shaw” sequel to the big screen was one that film executives are excited about, according to Johnson.

“So when it comes to Hobbs & Shaw, which we loved making that movie, there’s an idea that I had that I called Donna Langley, called our writer Chris Morgan, our producer Hiram Garcia. And I said, ‘I have this idea and this direction for Hobbs.’ And I pitched it and they all loved it,” the 49-year-old star shared.

Dwayne Johnson Said He Wants ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Sequel to ‘Be the Antithesis’ of Other ‘Fast & Furious’ Films

So, what does Dwayne Johnson have in mind for the sequel? Here’s where he described how the sequel would be different from the original franchise.

“It would be the antithesis of what ‘Fast and Furious’ movies generally are in that they continue to go on and go on and go on. In this case, I still want to do the quintessential Hobbs movie. That, without giving it away, you watch a man walk off into the sunset,” Johnson also shared.

Bringing a “Fast & Furious” story to the franchise’s fans that they wouldn’t expect to see coming is something that Dwayne Johnson said he finds excited. He also said that others agree with him and his desire to bring a change.

“Donna loved it and they’ve been wonderful partners at Universal, but I said, ‘You know, we have an opportunity here, I think to go against the grain and let’s disrupt things a little bit, and let’s create a movie within the ‘Fast and Furious’ world that is unexpected, that I think people will go, ‘Oh man, like, wow, thank you for that,’” The Rock explained.
