The 2020 Billboard Music Awards paid tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen and other fallen artists.

The Tribute to Eddie Van Halen

BBMA’s host Kelly Clarkson introduced the “one’s we lost” segment of the show. She listed off some of the musicians that we have lost this year including Mac Davis, Juice WRLD and Little Richard, among others.

“A true giant was taken from us,” Clarkson said of the legendary rockstar. “He was a legendary guitarist, an amazing musician and an incredible songwriter.”

Additionally, the BBMA’s played a rare televised performance from Van Halen. The band performed “Panama” at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. A portion of their epic performance was shown.

Finally, after the performance played out, the screen cut to his guitar on a stage with a single spotlight on it.

His Death

Van Halen passed away on October 6 at the age of 65. His cause of death was complications with a long battle with throat cancer. The cancer spread to his brain and other parts of his body. He died with his family at his side at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California.

After his death, his band’s sales and downloads of their catalog of music skyrocketed by 6,000%. Music legends have paid tribute to his life and musical legacy.

His brother Alex posted a throwback photo of the brothers growing up. “See you on the other side. Your brother, Al,” he wrote.

Van Halen’s wife, Janie Liszewski, paid tribute to her late husband in a beautiful letter. “My husband, my love, my Peep,” she captioned a sweet photo of the couple at the beach. “My heart and soul have been shattered into a million pieces. I never knew it was possible to cry so many tears or feel such incredible sadness.”

“Our journey together has not always been an easy one but in the end and always we have a connection and love that will always be,” she added. “Saying goodbye is the hardest thing I have ever had to do so instead I say so long, I will see you again soon in a place with no pain or sorrow. Please watch over Kody and I. We love you and miss you so very much. Love, your PooPee.”
