Valerie Bertinelli will always love Eddie Van Halen. She opened up about her feelings for the late rock ‘n’ roll star during an appearance on the “Today” show on Thursday (Feb. 18).
“Today” host Jenna Bush Hager brought up the subject of Van Halen, Bertinelli’s ex-husband, and his recent death to the actress and cooking show host during the interview.
“We are just sending our love. We know you lost your ex-husband and we hope you are doing OK,” Hager said as co-host Hoda Kotb listens in.
“It’s weird. Grief shame is something I never thought would happen to me,” Bertinelli told the hosts. “But, I knew the man for 40 years. I was 20 when I met him. I still loved him. We spent a lot of time together. He’s the father of my son. He’s the father of the greatest gift of my life.”
Talking about her ex-husband made Valerie Bertinelli visibly emotional. She was especially moved when the show displayed pictures of the couple’s son, Wolfgang, with Eddie Van Halen. “I love that picture,” she said.
Bertinelli goes on to say that she still misses Van Halen. “And, I’m allowed to miss him,” she added. ” He was a huge part of my life.”
Eddie Van Halen died in October 2020 from cancer. He was 65 years old at the time of his death. Bertinelli married Van Halen in 1981, according to Fox News. They were married until 2007 and had one child – a son named Wolfgang, who is now 29 years old.
Valerie Bertinelli, Eddie Van Halen Shared Unique Love
After her split from Van Halen, Valerie Bertinelli married Tom Vitale in 2011. Van Halen married Janie Liszewski during 2009. Even though they married other people, Bertinelli and Van Halen remained friends and still cared for one another.
“Just because we loved each other didn’t lessen the love that he had for Janie or me for Tom, so it’s a different kind of love,” Bertinelli said on “Today.” “I don’t know how to explain it. Maybe one day I’ll figure it out and write a book about it.”
Following Van Halen’s death last fall, Valerie Bertinelli shared her grief on her Instagram page. She used the post as a way to pay tribute to the rock star that was once her husband.
“40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you,” she posted at the time. “You gave me the one true light in my life, our son Wolfgang. Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin. I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life my love.”
