Nearly three months after Eddie Van Halen’s death, his ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli gave an emotional update on how she is coping with the loss.
In 2007, rocker Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli called it quits after 26 years of marriage. She is also the mother of Van Halen’s only child, Wolfgang Van Halen.
Bertinelli shares that the cause of the split was due to Eddie Van Halen’s substance abuse issues. In addition, the musician refused to quit smoking even amidst his cancer diagnosis.
In early October, 65-year-old Eddie Van Halen lost a lengthy battle with lung cancer, although he overcame both tongue and throat cancer.
Today, Bertinelli joined the TODAY show to talk about how she is fairing since her ex-husband’s passing. She quickly becomes emotional when talking about her son.
“It’s been rough. Very bittersweet, we’re doing okay. We spent the holidays together. I’ll see him later today. We’ve been spending a lot of time together.”
The show then displays a picture from Wolfgang’s Instagram of himself and his parents, who all smile for a selfie. The photo makes Bertinelli sniff as she looks back on the memory.
“Yeah, it’s hard. I’ve gone to text him a few dozen times, and it’s like ‘oh, no, I can’t text him right now.'”
Despite the divorce, the two remained close as they co-raised their son.
Emotional Tribute to Eddie Van Halen
On the day of Eddie’s death, Bertinelli shared an emotional post about how special a person the rocker was to others, as well as to her.
“40 years ago, my life changed forever when I met you. You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang. Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin. I’m so grateful, Wolfie, and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life, my love.”
Valerie Bertinelli remarried in 2011 to Tom Vitale. Eddie Van Halen also remarried in 2009 to Janie Liszewski, however, neither had another child.
