Last night, “Saturday Night Live” brought on controversial figure Elon Musk as the guest host.

Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and has a net worth of about 166 billion. Given his relevance and popularity on social media, specifically Twitter, as well as his overall status as one of the richest people in the world, Musk helped give the show a hefty boost in ratings.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Ratings

Variety reported that the May 8 episode had a 4.8 household rating and a 2.7 in the adults 18-49 demographic. “Saturday Night Live” featuring Elon Musk is now the third-highest in ratings for this season. The episodes with Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle as the hosts are at the top. Musk also is tied for that No. 3 spot with Adele hosting with H.E.R. as the musical guest.

Elon Musk was accompanied by Miley Cyrus as the musical performer of the night. She started the night off with a Mother’s Day tribute by singing the Dolly Parton song, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” Cyrus also performed the title track off her 2020 “Plastic Hearts” album. She also performed alongside The Kid LAROI for a remix of his song, “Without You.”

As of now, “SNL” is having its most-watched season in four years. Throughout the 17 episodes so far, there has been an average of 12.6 million viewers. Last night was the first time the show was also streamed internationally. The show reached more than 100 countries as it was live-streamed on YouTube.

It’s no huge surprise that Elon Musk was able to attract more people Saturday night. On Twitter alone, he has 53.6 million followers. His tweets have brought him a lot of criticism, as well as legal threats, in the past. He shared several of the skits from last night on his platform, such as the Wario act which he called “my fav.” Musk has long stood out for how he handles business as a CEO. He even joked that being on the show could be really risky for him. “I could say something truly shocking — like I drive a Prius,” Musk said.

There are two more episodes left for this season of “SNL.” On May 15, Keegan-Michael Key will be the host alongside musical guest Olivia Rodrigo. Then on May 22, Anna Taylor-Joy will host and Lil Nas X will be the musical guest.

Elon Musk as Host

“SNL” took the opportunity last night to poke fun at Elon Musk and his crazy antics and business ventures over the years.

However, Musk also took the opportunity to reveal something about himself with the entire world. His appearance on the show is said to be the first time he publically acknowledged having Asperger’s syndrome. He told viewers that he was “the first person with Asperger’s” to ever host the popular late night show. Musk was met with applause from the audience.

“Look, I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that’s just how my brain works,” Musk said.

Some fans on social media claimed that he was not the first person with Asperger’s to host the show. Instead, comedian Dan Aykroyd, who has both Tourette’s and Asperger’s, has hosted “SNL” in the past.

According to CNN, as far as business goes for Elon Musk, while he was hosting his dogecoin took a tumble. Musk’s mother joked about dogecoin at the very beginning of the show. As a result, investors immediately sold off dogecoin. It was down about 40% and trading at 44 cents on Sunday. Prior to the show, the value of the cryptocurrency was increased to lead up to his appearance on “SNL.”

Dogecoin is now the fifth-largest cryptocurrency in the world and has a market value of over $70 billion.
