In her memoir, Elvis and Me, Priscilla Presley tells an (allegedly) shocking story concerning the King of Rock & Roll and a few sleeping pills…

For Priscilla Beaulieu, her live as Priscilla Presley began on May 1, 1967 – one of the most famous wedding dates in American history. It was on this spring day she would marry the King himself, Elvis Presley, at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two were madly in love, and as such the Presley dynasty would grow considerably. Their marriage, however, proved to be every bit as colorful as their wedding venue.

Fans of the King know that the story of Elvis & Priscilla Presley is not a neat and tidy one. In a lot of ways, it’s far more dramatic than any fiction. The two met in 1959, a full seven years before their nuptials. At the time, Elvis was a soldier in the U.S. Army. As for Priscilla? She was just 14-years-old.

The two would send and share countless phonecalls, photos, and letters for several years. As they did, it became clear that the two could not see a future without the other. This led to, likely against their better judgement, Priscilla’s parents letting their daughter spend Christmas with Elvis at Graceland in 1962. She would’ve been 17 at the time.

While the trip has become infamous for many reasons, Priscilla tells one tale in her memoir that is less than “magical.”

The Turbulent Relationship of Elvis & Priscilla Presley

In her memoir, Elvis and Me, Priscilla calls the night began as we would expect: Graceland was lavishly decked out in Christmas lights and decorations. There, she spent the holiday with Elvis, his family, and his entourage: the Memphis Mafia. For them, Christmas was a party, and not a soul slept before 4 a.m.

Having flown in from Germany, Priscilla was ready to finally get some rest. She adds, in her words, that she had been up for two days prior to the trip out of excitement, as well. To Elvis, this meant she would need some help sleeping amidst all the commotion. It is then that Priscilla says that Elvis gave her two pills she had never seen before.

“I really didn’t need anything,” Priscilla recalls in Elvis and Me. “But he insisted, saying that they would help me sleep better and were a little stronger than what I’d taken before.”

Priscilla says she took the red pills without hesitation. Afterwards, she notes that she felt “good and kind of silly,” alongside a sense of heaviness.

After soaking herself in the bathtub, the future wife of Elvis Presley says she couldn’t handle the pills. She remembers “staggering over to where Elvis was lying,” then collapsing onto the bed.

From here, Priscilla recalls slipping in and out of what was either dreaming or hallucinating. Whenever she would come to, she couldn’t make sense of her surroundings. There was lots of “spinning around,” and she couldn’t really lift her head.

Priscilla Slept for Two Days in Graceland

Of the event, Priscilla Presley says she remembers one conversation she overheard.

“ ‘You got no business givin’ her something she’s not used to. Son, maybe we ought to call a doctor. She’s in bad shape. I don’t think we should take any chances,” someone was mumbling to Elvis.

His response? “Hell no, we’re not callin’ any doctor. Look, she’s comin’ to,” she recalls. She also recalls in her memoir that Elvis was, in fact, deeply concerned over her wellbeing. As a result, she says he took care of her on the chaise lounge in his office after the first day of her being in bed. Apparently, Elvis told her she was “out for two days on two…five-hundred-milligram Placidyls…”

Afterward, Priscilla notes that Elvis said he must have been “out of his head” to give her the pills. For his mistake, he bought her a puppy for Christmas Eve.

For her part, however, Priscilla swears she didn’t mind the whole affair. She wraps up the tale in Elvis and Me by saying she awoke with a “wink and a giddy grin” to the face of Elvis Presley.

What a story from a truly tumultuous union.
