After getting a glimpse of a young woman’s photo, Elvis Presley began a relationship with a young lady, although she was still in school. When the rock icon returned from Germany in 1960, he met a young dancer named Sandy Martindale. For the next six years, the two would share a romance they would never forget.

Although he had brought back his fiancée, Priscilla Presley, to Graceland, it wouldn’t stop him from being a ladies’ man. The King reportedly saw a photo of young Martindale in her father’s Los Angeles nightclub in 1961, and Elvis was smitten.

Long after their romance, Martindale spoke to Elvis.com.au in 2015 and recalled her romance with the King of rock-n-roll. At the time of the affair, Martindale was just 14-years-old. Yet, once the crooner got a peek at her photo, he was hooked.

She recalled: “He called me to go out, but I had to tell him I had school the next day. The next night Mom drove me to the club to meet him.” She added: “My mother came with us on our first dates. I was so embarrassed I cried.” Martindale went on to describe her very first date with The King.

“Elvis had a date with a gorgeous actress that night, and there I was, with my little ponytail.” At the time, Elvis was a decade older than Martindale. Yet that didn’t keep the 24-year-old from holding her hand and giving her a peck on the cheek. According to Martindale, after their first date, she “was a goner.”

Elvis & Martindale’s Relationship Transitions from Romance to Friendship

The two would date for the next six years, on and off. Even after they parted ways romantically, the two remained close. Martindale even worked with Elvis on a number of his films.

“I danced in six of his movies because I was going [out] with him,” she said about working with Elvis. Martindale, now 17 at the time, had the same dance teacher as Ann-Margret. As a result, she was able to book roles in Elvis’ films. “In Viva Las Vegas, that’s me with Ann-Margret and Elvis dancing at the roulette table.”

In 1967, Elvis broke things off with Martindale for good before marrying Priscilla. However, even after becoming a married man, he stayed in contact with Sandy, remaining friends until his tragic death.

Martindale also described being “devastated” the last time she saw Elvis. Her last visit with Elvis was backstage at one of his final Las Vegas concerts before he passed away in 1977.

Although Elvis was one of her first loves, she later married Wink Martindale, a well-known DJ, radio personality, and TV producer. Wink even became friends with Elvis and played many of his songs on his TV and radio shows.
