Elvis Presley’s father once spilled the beans on the alleged “real” reason that the King and Priscilla’s marriage ended.
Elvis Presley met Priscilla at a party while he was stationed in Germany during his short stint in the military. It didn’t take very long for the King to fancy the freshman in high school. Like most women, Priscilla was already a huge fan of Presley’s.
According to Express, their first meeting went as such. Elvis Presley said, “Well, what have we here? What are you, about a junior or senior in high school?” When she revealed that she was only in ninth grade, the King replied, “Why, you’re just a baby.”
Thus, the young and odd courtship began. Priscilla was only 14, while Elvis Presley was 24.
After the military, he returned to Memphis. Elvis did some heavy convincing to gain Priscilla’s parent’s permission to allow her to move in with him at Graceland. They ultimately gave in.
Elvis and Priscilla dated for almost a decade before the King finally popped the question.
However, in a 2015 interview with the Guardian, Priscilla admits that the biggest opponent toward the 1967 marriage was Elvis Presley’s father, Vernon Presley, who feared it would ruin his son’s career. A year later, Lisa Marie Presley was born.
Well, the union didn’t stop Presley’s fame, but the marriage didn’t last very long, ending in 1973 after Priscilla allegedly had an affair with her karate instructor.
Elvis Presley’s Father Recalled Relationship Issues
According to Express, Vernon once gave his thoughts on why the couple split to Good Housekeeping in 1978, following his son’s death. However, he only spoke highly of Priscilla in the interview.
“We didn’t care whom he married just so long as she was the girl with whom he’d be happiest. Being an Air Force officer’s daughter, Priscilla had been brought up to be disciplined and strong-minded, but she is also a tender and loving girl.”
So why did the marriage fail if it wasn’t for infidelity? Vernon said Elvis Presley wanted to be a bachelor.
“I believe that Elvis’ marriage to her failed simply because he realized after the wedding that he didn’t really want to be married. When he was traveling, it wasn’t practical for Priscilla to go along all the time, especially after Lisa was born. These separations put a strain on their relationship.”
Although Presley’s relationship with Priscilla ended, he was still close to his only child, Lisa Marie, stated Vernon.
“I want to emphasize that although he had to leave her often, Elvis was crazy about his little girl Lisa and she adored her daddy. When Lisa wasn’t in school, and he wasn’t on the road, she’d come to Memphis, and they’d play together in his home, Graceland, for hours.”
Elvis Presley went on to date many women after his divorce. He eventually proposed to model Ginger Alden right before his death, but unfortunately, never made it down the aisle.
