Did Emilio Estevez actually know how to skate when he played the iconic Coach Bombay in The Mighty Ducks?
The Mighty Ducks movies soared to fame after the premiere of the first film in 1992. The movie follows a reckless young lawyer named Gordon Bombay, played by Emilio Estevez. Bombay gets arrested for drunk driving and has to coach a kids hockey team for his community service. Two more movies were produced after the success of the first film. And, most recently, Disney released The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, a sequel series on Disney+. Estevez reprised his iconic role for the series.
During an interview with Kelly Clarkson, Emilio Estevez jokingly talked about how great he was at hockey when he auditioned for the role in the first movie.
“I’m terrific at hockey. I am really, I am so good at hockey,” joked Estevez. “I cannot even believe how great I am at hockey.”
Kelly also laughed and asked, “Are you one of those actors who says they’re really good at something to get the job?”
Estevez laughed again and immediately admitted that he was that kind of actor.
“Can you ride a horse? You bet I can. Can you skate? Yes. Can you drive a race car? All the time. That’s what we as actors do. We say anything we can to get the d–n job,” said Estevez.
Emilio Estevez Pretended To Know How To Skate To Get His Part In The Mighty Ducks Movie
During the same interview, Estevez said that when he auditioned for the role in the first Mighty Ducks movie, he did not know how to skate. But he quickly realized that he was going to have to teach himself.
“So, of course, when I met the directors and the producers of the film, they asked, ‘Have you skated?’ And I said, ‘Oh absolutely, no problem.’ But I was terrified. They told us that they would put together a skating camp in Minnesota. And I’d be in it along with the rest of the kids,” said Estevez. “So I thought, ‘Well, if I get there and I don’t know how to skate, they’re going to tease me and I’ll never hear the end of it.’ So, for three weeks before I went to Minnesota, I trained and learned how to skate at least so that I didn’t fall and make a fool of myself.”
Did the training keep the kids of The Mighty Ducks cast from making fun of Estevez?
“They still made fun of me,” said Estevez laughing.
