During the mid-1960s and into the early 1970s, the television series “Family Affair” offered its viewers a look into a family dynamic that many of them probably never have experienced in their own lives.
As fans of the show are aware, the popular series centered around New York City bachelor Bill Davis (Brian Keith). Because of the death of his brother and his wife, Bill must take in their three children. Those children were Cissy (Kathy Garver), who was a teenager at the time, and also the young twins named, Buffy (Anissa Jones) and Jody (Johnny Whitaker). Helping Bill care for the new – and unexpected family members – was his English valet, Mr. Giles French (Sebastian Cabot).
For Kathy Garver, it is her role as Cissy in “Family Affair” for which she is most remembered. However, before she joined the cast of the popular CBS family sitcom, Garver had already made a name for herself in the entertainment industry.
One of Kathy Garver’s most famous roles came when she was just 7 years old. It was at that young age that she appeared in the classic film “The Ten Commandments.” That film was released in 1956. In it, Garver had an uncredited role as the character of Rachel.
Most films will also know that “The Ten Commandments” starred famous movie star Charlton Heston. He played Moses in the film, which was directed by Hollywood icon Cecil B. DeMille. Also part of the cast were famous actors such as Yul Brenner as the character of Rameses, Anne Baxter as Nefretiri, and Edward G. Robinson as Dathan.
‘Family Affair’ Star Kathy Garver Once Described Charlton Heston as ‘Magnificent’
Being part of such an iconic film was an important experience for “Family Affair” star Kathy Garver as an actress. It was also an experience that she continued to remember even into her later years. In fact, Garver talked about her part in “The Ten Commandments” in a November 2015 interview with Fox News.
Her memories of Charlton Heston were still very clear to her when she gave that 2015 interview to Fox News. And, unsurprisingly, Heston’s star power loomed large on the set of “The Ten Commandments.” And Garver and Heston were friends for years after the movie was filmed.
“I just thought he was magnificent. We stayed friends till he died. He was gracious and generous and strong,” the “Family Affair” actress also shared.
Garver also found similarities between Heston and her “Family Affair” costar Brian Keith. That similarity is that they both served in the United States Armed Forces. It is this quality, she said, made them stand out from so many others.
“We don’t have a lot of real stronger guys that there were earlier on like Brian Keith was in the Marines. A lot of the stars were actually in the military and they were really strong characters. I liked that about Charlton and Brian,” Garver also shared.
