If you were a fan of the classic ’90s sitcom “Family Matters,” there is some big news brewing. Recently, CBS announced that two of its original actors would appear for a reunion on the popular soap opera, “The Young and the Restless.”
The reunion will see Bryton James (Devon) and Telma Hopkins, who played his mom back in the day on “Family Matters.” According to Entertainment Weekly, Hopkins will make a special appearance on the soap opera for multiple episodes, beginning Tuesday, June 1.
Hopkins will play the role of Denise Tolliver, a private detective who reveals shocking information about the past of Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan). She will also share scenes with James, making some fans emotional as this will mark the first time the pair has worked together since “Family Matters” ended its run in 1998.
‘Family Matters’ Alum Telma Hopkins on Reunion: ‘It Is Full Circle’
“It is kind of like coming home,” Hopkins told Entertainment Weekly. “It is full circle. I don’t feel I have ever lost touch with him but certainly, it is nice to look across a room and see that smiling face that I am so used to. It feels like home, like family, like “Family Matters.”
“Acting felt effortless and comfortable when we stepped on the stage together,” James revealed in a recent interview. “When the scene started, we had to act like we didn’t know each other but it has reminded me and made me feel really grateful about how long I have been able to do this because Telma is one of the reasons that I have enjoyed it for 30 years. To step on my first stage with her and have Telma be the one to make me feel so comfortable and at home back then, it is very special.”
Besides her memorable performance as Rachel Crawford on “Family Matters,” Hopkins has also worked on “Bosom Buddies,” “Gimme a Break,” and “Half and Half.” Most recently, she guest-starred on Netflix’s breakout series, “Dead to Me.”
On Instagram, James also let it be known that he was eager to get back to work with Hopkins. He included a side-by-side photo of the duo in the post, one from his early days on “Family Matter” and the other more recent. In the caption, he wrote, “31 years ago, she held me my first day on set. And now, I have the honor of sharing the stage once again with the incomparable Telma Hopkins.” James added that fans would not want to miss their upcoming scenes together.
