Final Episode of Legendary Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek Airs

It should be a “Jeopardy” question years from now, after we’ve fully emotionally absorbed the death of host Alex Trebek.

“The final answer in the final show for Alex Trebek.” That would be “What was an isotope?”

Trebek died of pancreatic cancer on November 8. He was 80. Trebek filmed his final show 10 days before his death. On Friday, we finally got to see the final show.

Here Are Some Highlights of The Final Show With Alex Trebek

Some highlights:

Trebek’s last Final Jeopardy category was “women and science.”

Here was his last clue: “Dr. Margaret Todd gave science this word for different forms of one basic substance; it’s from the Greek for ‘equal’ and ‘place.’”

The final three contestants were returning champion Yoshie Hill, Jim Gilligan, an educator from New York and Cliff Yang, a software engineer manager from Illinois. Only Hill and Gilligan made it to Final Jeopardy. Yang was negative in the money, so he had nothing to wager.

Gilligan also will be a detail in future trivia questions involving Alex Trebek and Jeopardy. He won the final show with $24,401.

The show’s producers devoted the last few moments of the show to Trebek, playing a montage of his moments on and off the game show. The first wave was some of Trebek’s fun-loving moments. The next, a sampling of the times he’s signed off the show. The final one showed him saying “so long” as he walked off the set.

The show ended with this graphic: “Dedicated to Alex Trebek, Forever in our Hearts, Always our Inspiration.”

After the show, Jeopardy’s official account posted the montage on Twitter. The tweet said: “Simply the best. Thank you, Alex.”

As the final five Jeopary episodes were shown this week, producers indicated they would use special guests to host the show until a replacement is found.

Katie Couric, the journalist and former host of NBC’s “Today Show” will be one of the first guest hosts.

When new “Jeopardy” shows start Monday, former super champion Ken Jennings will be in charge of reading off the clues.

Trebek hosted the show for 36 years. He did so for more than 8,000 episodes. The show has been running in some form since 1964.

Trebek is survived by his wife Jean and children Matthew, Emily, and Nicky.
