‘Fixer Upper’ Stars Chip and Joanna Gaines Debut New Rental Cottage

by Suzanne Halliburton

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines are adding to their real estate empire.

The power couple revealed their newest vacation rental, Wednesday. They call it Hillcrest Cottage. And it’s on the grounds of an estate the Fixer Upper stars bought and renovated several years back.

The new rental is in Waco, Texas, where the couple live with their five kids. And if you’d like to vacation in Waco or Central Texas, you can rent the true Fixer Upper cottage for $424 a night. It’s part of the Magnolia collection of rentals on Airbnb. The rental proved to be quite popular on its first day. Guests already booked the weekends for the next two months. The same was true for all but a smattering of weekday nights. Waco is a big college town and Baylor football season starts this weekend. Each booking requires a minimum two-night stay and a $50 cleaning fee.

Here’s how the Fixer Upper couple describes the renovated cottage:

“Enjoy a quiet getaway in this charming cottage renovated, designed, and owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines. Originally the carriage house for Hillcrest Estate, this home includes one bedroom, one bath, an office nook and a private back patio. This makes it the perfect getaway for a party of two, or if you’re stopping through town and need a restful place to retreat.”

The Gaines, according to People, first were attracted to the property because of its history. The cottage was built in 1903. The couple bought it in 2017, a year after they started renovating rentals for bookings on Airbnb. They also own the Hillcrest Estate, the five-bedroom mansion that goes for more than $1,000 a night.

Fixer Upper Couple Called First Rental Magnolia House

The Fixer Upper stars’ very first rental home is called Magnolia House. It’s in nearby McGregor and its’ weekday rate is $545 a night.

All these rentals sport the Fixer Upper aesthetic. The Hillcrest Cottage is only one bedroom and is meant for two people. The home features beamed ceilings and brick floors. The stylings are in neutral shades of gray, beige and black. There’s also a patio just outside the bedroom. You can check out photos of the rental home here.

The Fixer Upper stars made Waco a tourist destination when they launched their Magnolia company in 2015. The city was averaging two million tourists a year until 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic derailed the travel business. Still, the Gaines kept building, adding a chapel, six shops, a Magnolia home store and a wiffle ball field near their downtown Waco development called the Silos.

Meanwhile, Joanna Gaines’ new fall line launched at Target last month.

It’s been an incredible summer for the Gaines family. They launched the Magnolia Network on Discovery+ and the Magnolia App. Part of the programming is a rebranding of Fixer Upper, which first appeared on HGTV. Joanna Gaines also does a cooking show called Magnolia Table.
