When it comes to the beloved sitcom “Frasier,” it is the characters that stand out as one of the key factors that made the series so popular for so long. Interestingly, there is one character that viewers never actually saw on screen.

The characters in this television universe are quirky and funny and clever and complex. And, of course, fans have the creative minds behind the show to thank for making their favorite characters so entertaining.

The central character in the famous sitcom was Dr. Frasier Crane (played by Kelsey Grammer). This character originally appeared in “Cheers” – one of the most famous sitcoms of all time – before he landed his own show. When he got his own show, the orbit around the character had to vastly expand.

Frasier’s family members are also key to the plot of “Frasier.” Those family members are his father, Martin Crane (John Mahoney), and his brother, Dr. Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce). There was also the adorable dog, Eddie (Moose), who was part of the family. You also had two very important women to the Crane men. One of them was Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves). The other was Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin).

There is another female character that was frequently mentioned in the famous sitcom. However, according to Looper, viewers never actually saw this character on screen during the show’s 11 seasons. The show’s original run began in 1993 and continued until 2004.

So, which character was often talked about on “Frasier,” but never actually appeared on screen?

Unseen Character on ‘Frasier’ Described as ‘Like the Sun’

That character was Maris – the wife of Dr. Niles Crane. If you watched the sitcom, you will know that Maris was Frasier Crane was not very fond of his sister-in-law. In fact, during the first episode of the series, he offered a very spot-on and humorous explanation of Maris.

He did so after Niles asked him if Maris was a person Frasier enjoyed spending time with. “I like her from a distance, you know, the way you like the sun. Maris is like the sun. Except without the warmth,” Kelsey Grammer said as his famous character.

As the sitcom continued, viewers learned some more details about Maris. For example, they learned that Maris was a very thin person. They also learned that she was very rich – and not very nice.

Maris never appeared in an episode of “Frasier.” Interestingly, when the spinoff of “Cheers” began, the plan was to begin the show without Maris making an appearance. Then, the plan called for Maris to finally appear.

However, because of the way she was described in the early episodes of the series, the showrunners felt that there was no actress who could play the character as she had been described.

“Two or three episodes in, she was already so bizarre, she was uncastable. So we just went, ‘Well, we’re never going to see her.’ Although we did see the shadow of her behind a shower curtain once,” David Lee, a co-creator of “Frasier,” told Yahoo! News.

On another note, a reboot of “Frasier” is in the works. You can read more about that here.
