What’s a Frasier reboot without David Hyde Pierce? Seriously, who will be friends with Dr. Frasier if his not his brother Niles?
David Hyde Pierce as Niles made a fussy snob so much fun to love.
We need more of Niles and his mooning over Daphne while telling all his Maris stories. Besides, Niles might as well be Frasier’s fraternal twin. They’re that close in thought and mannerisms.
On Wednesday, fans of Frasier rejoiced at the revival news. The show is part of a new lineup on Paramount+ Streaming service. Kelsey Grammer, the star of the show, had talked up a reboot for several years now.
So Kelsey Grammer gave a very Frasier-like statement Wednesday about the pickup.
“Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world,” Grammer said. “I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane.”
Cheers Spinoff, Was All About Dr. Frasier Crane, His Family and Friends
Frasier Crane first was a popular character on Cheers. Then, when Cheers ended, Kelsey Grammer became the star of a new show called Frasier. The psychiatrist based in Boston moved to Seattle to be with his family, including Martin — his dad –Niles and dog, Eddie. Frasier got a job as a doctor on a radio show. Roz Doyle was his bossy, man-crazy producer. And Frasier hired Daphne to work as his father’s live-in physical therapist. Niles and Daphne eventually married. Meanwhile, Maris, his unseen ex-wife, skipped off to an island to evade police.
The series ended in May 2004. Frasier got a new job in San Francisco. With his family happy and settled in Seattle, he felt secure enough to leave the nest again. So he packed up his fabulous high-rise apartment in Seattle and hopped on a plane, presumably to San Francisco. Yet, we heard the “welcome to Chicago” when Frasier landed. His potential soul mate Charlotte lived there.
So, the reboot can pick up in San Francisco or Chicago with Frasier and a completely new cast of characters.
Deadline reported that David Hyde Pierce has been approached about reprising Niles. But will he be part of the cast? Four years ago, he was asked about the idea of playing Niles again. The TV world was feeling nostalgic for past shows. But Pierce gave an emphatic no.
The new incarnation of Frasier, which probably won’t be on the streaming service til next year, will be written by Chris Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Joe Cristalli (Life In Pieces). Grammer will be one of the executive producers, so there will be obvious continuity.
But, will they be able to create the Frasier magic. That’s the question. The show won the Emmy for best comedy series for five straight years. And the cast won 37 Emmys.
David Hyde Pierce was nominated for best supporting actor for a record 11 consecutive years. He won in 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2004.
