George Segal Dies at 87: His Final Episode of ‘The Goldbergs’ Will Air with Special Tribute

After the tragic passing of the Hollywood legend George Segal, fans everywhere are mourning the loss. In addition to his fans, his fellow cast members and crew on ABC’s “The Goldbergs” will say goodbye to his character, Albert “Pops” Solomon, in an upcoming episode. 

For eight years, Segal played the role of “Pops” on the beloved 80s-themed sitcom. After passing away at 87 on Tuesday, his final episode of the series will act as a mournful goodbye to the man and the character his fans came to love. 

Segal’s final episode of “The Goldbergs” will be Season 8, Episode 16, titled “Couple Off.” Fans can watch the episode on Wednesday, April 7.

According to ABC, the episode’s official synopsis will follow Barry and Joanne as they crash Erica and Geoff’s weekend camping trip. As the episode unfolds, they end up in a competition to see who is the better couple, resulting in some rifts in relationships. After learning that Brea thinks Adam has it easy, Adam seeks to prove her wrong by getting a job but realizes she might be right. 

Since 2013, Segal has had a recurring role in the series. Fans can also expect the show to pay a heartfelt tribute to the late actor with an on-air memorial. However, the network has yet to release any details. In addition, the show has not announced if it will comment on Segal’s death in the upcoming episode set to air on Wednesday night. 

According to his widow, Sonia Segal, he passed away after experiencing “complications from bypass surgery.” 

Cast & Crew of ‘The Goldbergs’ Mourn the Loss of George Segal

After his family announced his passing, ABC released a statement. “For eight years, George Segal made us laugh as Pops on ‘The Goldbergs,’ but his legacy in the entertainment world spans decades.” 

In addition, the network added that Segal’s “talent has left an indelible mark and we’re grateful for the laughter and joy he has given us all.” ABC also lent their “thoughts and deepest condolences” to his family. 

As for Segal’s on-screen family, the cast and crew of “The Goldbergs” said they are “devastated” by the actor’s loss and remembered him as “kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny” and “the true epitome of class.” They added that it was “an honor and a privilege” to have worked so closely with him over the past years, adding that “all will miss him.”

Segal’s final appearance in “The Goldbergs” will air on Wednesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. EST/ 6 p.m. CST.
