George Segal’s Final Episode of ‘The Goldbergs’: How, When to Watch

For longstanding fans of ABC’s “The Goldbergs,” we’re here to help you prep for an episode full of some potential waterworks and overall sadness.

The beloved George Segal, who portrayed Albert “Pops” Solomon on the sitcom, passed away on March 23 at the age of 87. His wife, Sonia Segal, shared the news of his passing after complications from bypass surgery.

Now, his final appearance on TV is quickly approaching.

Watching ‘The Goldbergs’ Last George Segal Episode

For fans of “The Goldbergs,” or Segal and his six-decade-long career, his last episode on the sitcom will be tonight (April 7). The episode is called “Couple Off.” The episode, along with the past few week’s episodes, were all prerecorded.

In addition to it being his last episode, the show will also have a tribute to Segal at the end. The episode starts at 8 p.m. ET or viewers can live-stream it on ABC.com/watch-live. Fans can also watch on the ABC app, but that will require a cable provider login.

Similarly, fans can watch on fuboTV, Hulu + Live TV, and YouTube TV. If you’re just looking to watch this once, consider just getting a free trial.

Segal Legacy on the Show

Since Segal passed away, several of his co-stars have posted sweet tributes on social media. The actor, who also appeared in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” “Flirting with Disaster,” “Blume in Love,” and “For the Boys,” had a tremendous impact. This includes emotional, as well as in a career sense.

Wendi McLendon-Covey stars in the show as Beverly Goldberg. She plays the overprotective mother of the family often nicknamed “smother” by the children.

McLendon-Covey posted a photo of the two of them hugging and smiling together shortly after he passed away. She captioned it, “Didn’t know the last time I saw you would be the last time I’d see you.”

The episode airing tonight was filmed right before he passed away. Segal has been playing the lovable Pops since 2013. Fans of “The Goldbergs” especially love his best friend relationship with the youngest of the family, Adam.

Sean Giambrone, who plays Adam, also posted a tribute for Segal. “My heart is broken. I lost a dear friend. Working with George was an honor and some of the happiest moments of my life. What a sweet & wonderful man. He was my confidant & teacher. When he smiled it changed my day. I wish everyone could have met him. I love you George and I’ll miss you so much. My prayers are with the family.”

ABC describes the last episode on their official site. It reads, ‘When Barry and Joanne crash Erica and Geoff’s peaceful weekend camping trip, they end up in a competition to see who is the better couple, causing some unexpected shifts in relationships. After learning that Brea thinks Adam has an easy, privileged life, Adam seeks to prove her wrong by getting a job but quickly learns she might be right. A special new Goldbergs.”

Segal himself had been with his wife since 1996. He also had two kids.

This is not the final episode of the season, but it is George’s last. McLendon-Covery will be live-tweeting the episode. It is unclear if the show is being picked up for a ninth season or not. If it does, George’s death will have to be addressed, but McLendon-Covey and others have made it clear that Segal is irreplaceable.
