Actress Dawn Wells is likely best known for her role as the sweet and endlessly innocent Mary Ann Summers, on the popular 1960s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island.” During her time on the set, Wells met a variety of famous faces. She also created some memorable moments while working on the hit television series.

In the iconic series, Wells’s Mary Ann was marooned on an island with a cast of characters. There’s the hit show’s namesake, Gilligan, (Bob Denver) a crewman on the S.S. Minnow, the ship on which the group was sailing when they were marooned.

There’s also the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.), the captain of the S.S. Minnow. Other characters on the island include a millionaire (Jim Backus), and his wife (Natalie Schafer). The professor (Russell Johnson), and a former movie star (Tina Louise), rounded out the “Gilligan’s Island” crew. The cast was no stranger to interesting characters.

The series also featured many revolving appearances of some celebrity icons. The show featured guests such as Zsa Zsa Gabor, Kurt Russel, and even the Harlem Globetrotters.

Dawn Wells Was Star-Struck By a Hollywood Legend

During an interview with Florida Today, Dawn Wells discussed meeting many interesting people during her time in Hollywood. She even told the outlet which Hollywood icon made her star-struck when she met her.

“That’s tough, I have to really think about that,” Dawn Wells said in the 2016 interview when asked who was the most fascinating person she met during “Gilligan Island’s” three-season run.

“I would have to say Katherine Hepburn,” the star decided. “I was just kind of in awe of her when I met her at a condo in Vancouver, Canada.”

For Wells, meeting the Hollywood star was what she called an incredible experience.

“There she was with her hair pulled back sipping on a Scotch on the rocks,” Wells said of the “On Golden Pond” actress. “It was just an incredible experience.”

Wells and her “Gilligans Island” Character Weren’t Too Different

During the interview, Dawn Wells also noted that, while Mary Ann was simply a character on the hit television series, she does see pieces of herself in the kind-hearted young woman.

“I am very much a Mary Ann,” the actress noted. “I grew up with a mother who knew where I was every minute of the day, and I never really got into trouble.”
