“Gilligan’s Island” has been a wildly popular television sitcom for so many over several decades now. However, Tina Louise, who played Ginger on the hit show, wasn’t always happy behind the scenes. The actress also did not participate in any of the movies based on the show released after its final episode aired.
According to an article on CheatSheet.com, the show is a comedy about a group of individuals who take a boat ride, well a three-hour tour, that ends in disaster. They are stranded and no one comes to take them off the deserted island. So, they have to find ways to take care of themselves.
The show included a unique cast of characters. Of course, there was Gilligan himself. There was also the skipper, a millionaire and his wife, the professor, and Mary Ann. Louise’s character, Ginger, was a movie star.
Tina Louise Reportedly Kept Distance from Costars
In her role as the movie star Ginger, Tina Louise became a fan favorite. Somehow, she always managed to look stunning and be dressed to kill on that deserted island. However, the actress playing the movie star wasn’t happy behind the scenes.
According to reports, this led to drama between Louise and her costars. Apparently, she didn’t like that “Gilligan’s Island” was so focused on slapstick comedy. She also wanted to be the star of the series and not just part of the ensemble. It has also been reported that Tina Louise would isolate herself from her fellow actors during rehearsals.
Mary Ann actress Dawn Wells said she and Tina Louise did not oppose one another. However, she also said they were “not close.” She also added: “Even though we weren’t close friends, I have pleasant memories,” according to Forbes.

After “Gilligan’s Island” concluded its run on television, reunion movies were made. However, Tina Louise did not participate in them. Did this mean she hated her time on the show? Maybe. Maybe not.
The actress has never openly criticized the show, according to the article. She reportedly even told Closer Weekly during 2019 that “Gilligan’s Island” was “a great escape” for its fans. She also said she was “happy to have been part of something that was so special to American television.”
Cast Members Mourn Passing of Dawn Wells
Tina Louise is still with us, but sadly Dawn Wells, the actress who portrayed Mary Ann recently passed away. Wells died due to COVID-19 on Dec. 30, 2020. With the passing of Wells, Louise is the only living main cast member from “Gilligan’s Island.”
Among the celebrities who mourned Wells was Jon Cryer, a star of “Two and a Half Men.” “It was such a thrill for me to meet Dawn Wells when she came to see Two and a Half Men,” Cryer posted on Twitter. “She could not have been more lovely and gracious. I’m so grateful that I got to enjoy the work she loved doing.”
