By the sounds of it, 99-year-old Betty White does not take the chemistry and bond with her former “Golden Girls” actresses for granted.
In a sit-down with OK! Magazine earlier this year, the Golden Girls star said that the chemistry on the show was second to none. Even though it has been more than 30 years since the groundbreaking show first aired, Betty White is still impressed today at just how naturally things came to the co-stars.
“We all showed up for the read-through [and] it was like batting a tennis ball over the net,” White explained. “It was so exciting to be with four people with that chemistry. I’ll never forget the first read. It was like we had been working together forever! I still get goosebumps thinking about it.”
Betty White Discusses Family Dynamics on ‘Golden Girls’
The great Betty White is widely referred to as one of the pioneers of television. Incredibly, she has been in the industry for more than 80 years. Of course, she is perhaps best known for her roles as Sue Ann Nivens on the CBS sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and as Rose Nylund on the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls.
Her time on those shows has left her with a deep respect for her fellow colleagues. The Golden Girls star views the people she has worked with over the years as a family. She finds it hard to believe that there are other shows where
“You can’t work that closely together and not become a family,” White confided. “I hear these horror stories about series where they don’t speak off-camera. How do you do comedy if you’re not speaking to each other?”
And while Betty White and her Golden Girls co-stars were more like a family on set, they also behaved like a family when they weren’t behind the camera. They once traveled together to London to meet Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother, who was a big fan of The Golden Girls. Not only that but they even would gather on occasion for dinner.
“Betty would invite everyone over to have a meal at her house, which they’d agree to — as long as Betty wasn’t cooking,” an insider told OK! Magazine. The star always employed a personal chef when she hosted dinner parties for her fellow co-stars.
White replied saying, “I’m not a big cook. I only go in the kitchen to feed my dog.”
