Today, the rock and roll legend, Jon Bon Jovi turns 59 years old. Known mostly for his work as the frontman of Bon Jovi, he has released fifteen studio albums with the band and two by himself. Apart from his musical life, Bon Jovi has also made a name for himself as a philanthropist, actor, and producer. Let’s take a look at some of his most unforgettable moments as an American musical icon.

The King of Hair Bands

Anyone who lived through the ’80s knows that a band was only as good as its hair. Take Van Halen for example. Do you think anyone would have listened if it wasn’t for the hair? Well, Eddie certainly had his chops, but you get the point. Either way, you can’t talk about hair without talking about Jon Bon Jovi. I mean, look at those locks!

Throughout his career, Jon Bon Jovi rocked some different styles, but his look circa 1984 around when his hit song “Shot to the Heart” came out takes the cake. However, we don’t discriminate against any Bon Jovi hairstyles. Even after the big cut in the ’90s, Jon still rocked out.

Jon Bon Jovi Strikes Out On His Own

How about Jon Bon Jovi’s solo rock ballad, “Blaze of Glory” from 1990? As it turns out, JBJ didn’t need his band to absolutely crush a vocal performance. On top of it all, he still had his magnificent hair. The music video for this song matches the epic nature of the song. It simply feels like Bon Jovi wrote it to play it in a stadium with thousands of people.

Per usual, his flowing hair and tight leather outfit ooze with swagger as he belts out the lines to his solo song. The haunting guitar riff echoes with the stripped-down drums drenched in reverb. The song came at the turn of the decade, however, it still contained every part of an ’80s masterpiece.

Jon Bon Jovi on the Karaoke Machine

Almost every song by Bon Jovi lives in a karaoke machine. The lyrics and melodies simply beg to be sung by middle-aged bachelors at a Mexican restaurant on Thursday nights. However, those drunken wails never hold a finger on Jon Bon Jovi’s powerful voice. Take a look at this one time that Jon let everyone know how the songs are supposed to sound.

I mean, who can blame the guy? He had to sit there and listen to dozens of people absolutely butcher his musical masterpieces. I would have blown my cover too if I were in Jon Bon Jovi’s shoes… or beard should I say.

A Musician and Also a Philanthropist

Just as that karaoke video displays, Jon has always done his part in the community. The video was supported by the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, a charity that Jon founded himself. The foundation seeks to make the world a better place one soul at a time. To get there, they run programs to help raise money to fight cancer, feed the hungry, and shelter the homeless. Their website explains it all in their mission statement.

“Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty, hunger and homelessness through developing partnerships, creating programs and providing grant funding to community benefit organizations,” the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation website reads. “We invite you to join us in creating innovative and long-lasting solutions to hunger and homelessness and support our desire to provide safe and affordable housing options in communities throughout the US. We are committed to rebuilding pride in one’s self and one’s community.”

So happy birthday to the man that does it all. From music to philanthropy, here’s to many more unforgettable moments with Jon Bon Jovi.
