Today would have been Paul Newman’s 96th birthday. In honor of his day, we’re highlighting some of Paul’s best Hollywood moments.
Undoubtedly, Newman made a name for himself in movies. He starred in films including Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, The Color of Money, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. His last film, before passing in 2008, was Cars. Newman voiced the character, Doc Hudson. Which was perfect because Newman was a lover of all things cars. He was a known race car driver and even placed second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. In honor of what would have been his 96th birthday, we’re highlighting some of Paul’s best career moments.
Paul Newman’s Most Iconic Hollywood Moments
Trying to rank Newman’s silver screen appearances would be almost impossible. So, in no particular order, here are some of the film icon’s most memorable scenes.
Cool Hand Luke
Certainly, this is one of Paul’s most popular films. We see him fight. We see his perseverance, strength, and bravado. However, we also see a softer side to Newman.
During this scene, Paul sings “Plastic Jesus” about his dead mother while surrounded by his fellow inmates. This scene really confirmed Newman’s spot in Hollywood as a profound and talented actor.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Butch has to defend his spot as leader of the pack in this scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Even during a knife fight, Newman is able to maintain his witty charm.
Flat Nose, a member of the group, who moments earlier had no problem with Butch being killed in a knife fight, runs up to Butch after the fight and says, “I was really rooting for you Butch!” To which Butch responds, “Well, thank you, Flat Nose. That’s what sustained me in my time of trouble.”
The Color of Money
This film was nominated for five Academy Awards and brought Paul Newman his first Academy Award win for Best Actor. During this scene, Newman shows off his famous sharp wit and suave nature as he teaches Carmen a few things about gambling.
You can cut the tension with a knife during this classic poker scene. However, Newman remains nonchalant and even a little sloppy during this scene, making his opponents that much more uneasy.
Newman also delivers the famous line at the end of the scene, “You won’t be able to get a game of jacks!”
Newman And His Wife, Actress Joanne Woodward Work Together
The Long Hot Summer
Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward team up for a steamy and drama-filled romance. During this scene, the two push each other’s buttons as Newman calls Woodward to “Get out of character. Get way out!’
The two celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary the same year of Newman’s passing.
