Tom Cruise was born on this day in 1962. The actor is celebrating his 59th birthday on July 3.

Electrical engineer Thomas Cruise Mapother III and special education teacher Mary Lee gave welcomed Tom Cruise on July 3, 1962, in Louisville Kentucky. Tom grew up alongside his three sisters, Lee Anne, Marian, and Cass before the family moved to Canada. His mother left his father and the family moved back to the United States.

Tom discovered his passion for acting shortly after and the rest is history.

The 1996 romantic sports film Jerry Maguire featured Cruise in an unlikely role. Despite him not being known for his chemistry with female co-stars, he shined with Renee Zellweger. The film followed Maguire, an A-list sports agent who has a life-altering realization about what matters to him. Unfortunately, his fellow co-workers and bosses didn’t agree. He was fired from his company with only Dorothy Boyd moving to start a new company with him. Together they have one client, Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.

Who could forget the iconic lines “Show me the money” or “You had me at hello”? Who could forget the realistic fall after Maguire was fired? That was actually a secret between Tom Cruise and the director while the cast genuinely reacted to his spill.

The 1992 legal drama A Few Good Men. The movie made nearly $250 million at the box office, over five times the amount that it cost to make the film. Tom shined in a new light, in the courtroom.

In a drastically different role, Tom Cruise made history with Risky Business. His iconic floor slide wearing nothing but socks, a white shirt, and sunglasses has been parodied by countless people.

Tom Cruise and His Franchises

A billion-dollar franchise is rarely heard of but Mission Impossible is just that. The six films grossed over three billion dollars. His role as Ethan Hunt cemented himself as an action hero at the box office.

Typically movies don’t see a third film, yet this franchise has continued on with a loyal fan base. Tom also saw creating sequels as both a logistical and artistic challenge to keep the audience guessing. Funnily enough, Tom adores stunt work and thrills, he was even told to stop smiling when he would perform the stunts for the films.

At just 24-years-old Tom Cruise secured the role of Maverick in Top Gun. The film spawned the globally used quote, “I feel the need… the need for speed!” Among its quotable dialogue, it also launched an unforgettable franchise.

The second film in its installment is set to debut on November 19, 2021, over thirty years later. The movie is sure to add more iconic scenes to Tom Cruise’s repertoire. The movie is unlike anything cinema-goers have ever seen before, that’s what drew Tom to the revival. In fact, Tom promises that a movie has never been shot this way in history.

“I realised that there were things that we could accomplish cinematically,” he told Empire. “And I started getting excited about this big challenge of, ‘How do we do it?’ So I said to Jerry, ‘I’ll do it if…’ meaning, I’m not going to do the CGI stuff.”
