The Fast and Furious franchise is expanding, but Dwayne Johnson is out. Hiram Garcia of Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions confirmed with Collider that Johnson will no longer play Luke Hobbs. And he explained why.

Garcia, president of productions with Seven Bucks, sat down to promote Dwayne Johnson’s newest release Jungle Cruise. And while he was there, he finally answered questions about Johnson’s future with The Fast movies. According to him, The Rock will not make an appearance in the upcoming Fast & Furious 10 or 11.

Fast & Furious 10 is slated to hit theaters on April 7, 2022. And while Johnson is making a jump, Sung Kang, Vin Diesel, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson are all planning to return to the screen.

Dwayne Johnson is Focusing on ‘Other Storytelling Avenues’

“After filming Fast 8, DJ made the clear decision to close the Fast & Furious chapter for all the evident reasons. He wished them all well and shifted our focus on to other storytelling avenues,” Garcia told Collider.

Johnson joined the Fast & Furious cast in 2011 for the fifth installment. He last played Luke Hobbs in the 2017 film The Fate of The Furious

However, Johnson will be starring in Hobbs & Shaw 2, and the film is currently in the works. Garcia noted that the writers are working on a new twist for the next movie. And they know fans will love it.

“At the moment, we’re trying to figure out what that sequel is going to be, but we have some very big ideas,” Garcia said. “So while he will not be in F10 or F11, that won’t in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans.”

Garcia did acknowledge that by playing in Hobbs & Shaw, Johnson is still linked to the Fast franchise. “Obviously all these characters exist in the Fast universe and we love to see all aspects of that universe thrive and succeed,” he told reporters.

Dwayne Johnson said he decided to walk away because he wants to focus on other stories. But some people wonder if his feud with Vin Diesel played a part. The two started making headlines in 2016 while filming Fate of the Furious. In a social media post, The Rock made a comment about some of his costars being “candya**es.” And the jab seemed to be aimed at Vin Diesel. They’ve since claimed to have buried the hatchet, but that doesn’t always seem believable.

Vin Diesel recently told Uncrazed that he gave Dwayne “a lot of tough love” while they were filming together. Diesel claimed that he needed to help get Dwayne’s acting “where it needed to be.” And Johnson clapped back in a following interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I laughed and I laughed hard,” he said, referring to Diesel’s comment. “I think everyone had a laugh at that. And I’ll leave it at that.”
