Some celebrities feel comfortable sharing photos of their children or grandchildren on social media. HGTV star Erin Napier is not one of them.

Recently, the “Home Town” star addressed why she and her husband, Ben Napier, don’t show their child’s face in their social media posts.

On Monday, Erin Napier posted a photo of her and Ben reading to daughter Helen on Instagram. Accompanying the photo was the caption, “Let’s read that ‘Jumpin’ Up’ book.” – Helen

In the photo, Erin and Ben can clearly be seen. However, they use the book, Shel Silverstein’s “Falling Up,” to obscure the young girl’s face.

This, according to an article by PopCulture.com, prompted someone on Instagram to question why Helen’s face couldn’t be seen. Napier reportedly responded through an Instagram story on Tuesday. In addition, she also responded to a “rude comment” about her daughter.

“I explained to a very rude comment about Helen, but don’t want her being dogpiled,” Erin reportedly said. “I can block her and move on. But for those who must ask why we hide her face?”

To clarify, she goes on to explain why she and Ben choose not to show Helen’s face. Their decision allows them to protect the child from harmful comments as well as maintain her privacy.

“It’s an awful feeling to have millions of people pick apart an image of your baby’s face,” Napier’s message began. “… It’s upsetting when strangers visiting Laurel to see our ‘Home Town’ (thank y’all for doing that, btw) see her out with her grandmother and reach out to embrace her when she doesn’t know them.”

PopCulture.com also reports that Erin and Ben feel they should protect Helen’s privacy because she should get to decide if she wants to be a public figure.

“We are the protectors of her image. Without Helen, our lives would be hollow and there would be nothing to share. She exists and we are proud of her,” Erin said. “But her likeness is ours to protect and decide when it’s okay to share, no one else’s. That’s our personal choice, and it’s not the same for everyone. We love and appreciate everyone who supports the show, but Helen doesn’t owe anyone anything.”
