When you think about television personality Mike Rowe, the image that most likely pops into your mind is one from his time working on the “Dirty Jobs” television series. You probably are picturing Rowe covered in mud or covered in something even worse.

However, the 59-year-old Baltimore native is also famous for his deep, smooth voice. See, before he gave television viewers a look at jobs most of them would never consider doing, Rowe had another role in the entertainment industry. At first, the future host of “Dirty Jobs” worked as a reliable voiceover artist.

People love Rowe’s voice. And, honestly, you can’t blame them. He does have a great voice. So, unsurprisingly, over the years he has received many compliments about his voice. During an interview in March 2021 with journalist Ashleigh Banfield on NewsNation Now, he talked about how he used his voice to get his entertainment career off the ground. He also shared his way of responding to people who praise his voice.

It was Banfield who brought up this subject during the interview. “If there’s one thing (Mike) Rowe I could say, your voice – you always have me at hello. Um, and I guess you get that a lot, right? People talk about your voice a lot,” she said.

In the typical style of the “Dirty Jobs” star, he responded with a very funny quip. “Well, yeah. They typically say, you know, if only he had something to say, imagine how far he could go,” Rowe said with a laugh.

‘Dirty Jobs’ Star Mike Rowe Said He ‘Snuck Into’ Entertainment

The “Dirty Jobs” host then explained how his voice helped him get into entertainment. He also talked about some of his early voiceover work.

“You know, I sang a long time ago. I kind of snuck into the (entertainment) business vocally. I used to narrate everything. If there was a wildebeest trying to get across the vast reaches of the barren Serengeti, but being slowly eaten by hyenas and crocodiles, the odds were good it was me telling you about it,” Mike Rowe also shared.

And, again, Rowe made another joke. In doing so, he offered some advice. “And it never works out, Ashleigh, for the wildebeest by the way. Don’t leave the herd,” he added.

You can watch “Dirty Jobs” star Mike Rowe talk about how he responds to compliments about his famous voice below. His comments on this topic begin around the 4:20 mark of the video.

If you want to hear more from Mike Rowe, you can thanks to his new series, “How America Works.” In fact, in this series, Rowe is more heard than seen.

“We sent the cameras in. Our hope is to give America an honest look at really what it’s like maintaining the Hoover Dam turbines or running the most technically adapted fish boat in the world. It’s a bit like ‘Dirty Jobs,’ but without the host,” Rowe said of “How America Works.”
