Actors do research for their parts. “How I Met Your Mother” actress Alyson Hannigan took it to another level by watching a woman give birth.

Let’s set the scene up a bit.

Hannigan, who gained fame as Willow on “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” and on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother,” was a guest star on another CBS show, “Touched by an Angel.”

For her turn on “Angel,” she played a character named Cassie. The show itself starred Roma Downey, Della Reese, and John Dye as angels who helped people in different situations.

‘How I Met Your Mother’ Star Has Quite An Experience

“Before ‘Buffy,’ I did an episode of a show called ‘Touched By an Angel,'” Hannigan said. “I was playing a teen that was pregnant and going to give up the baby for adoption and took the baby instead. It was a drama.”

Actors always could use some background help in preparing for a role. In Hannigan’s case, she found herself being led to actually watch a woman give birth.

Hannigan said the doctor who was on the “Angel” set said to her that he has a woman who’s giving birth. The woman said that Hannigan could come watch the whole scene.

“I’m like, ‘Okay,'” she said. “Maybe I was 20. So I walk into this room and this woman is in the final stages of labor and I’m like what? Talk about awkward greeting. Then the doctor’s like, ‘Come on.’ So meeting this stranger, now watching her give birth.”

‘Touched by an Angel’ Episode Plays Role In Actress’ Life

Now Hannigan admits that the whole situation was a bit overwhelming. But Hannigan has become a mother herself to two children.

“Of course, it was incredible but she also made it look so easy,” Hannigan said. “I’m like this isn’t really going to help for the scene because I feel like it’s not as dramatic as it should be for a TV show.”

Hannigan said the woman made the birthing process look real easy. Yet she got caught up in the emotions of the moment.

“I got to watch her and I immediately started bawling because it was so beautiful and everything,” she said. “It was just like okay, bye. So weird. I guess it was like her sixth child so she didn’t really care.”

So, actually doing some homework for a role proved that it could lead to success for Hannigan.
