Pop musician Hunter Hayes is paying tribute to Canadian singer Shawn Mendes with a cover of the song “Monster.”

Hayes Tweets Cover Video

“In celebration of @ShawnMendes new album, Monster – a cover,” Hayes tweeted Sunday. He included in the tweet a TikTok video of the cover.

In an interview with Afterbuzz TV last year, Hayes shared that he would like to collaborate with Mendes at some point.

“Shawn Mendes keeps [naming] me in two or three interviews, so I keep hoping that that’ll [a collaboration will] happen at some point… he’s such a badass and I, I would, I would really enjoy that,” Hayes said.

“I got to meet him a couple years ago when he did a show in Nashville and hang out with him a little bit,” Hayes elaborated. “I just love the pure human being that exists behind all that music. And I love the purity of his music, too, so, that would be dope.”

Moving Music by Mendes

Hayes has previously performed songs by Mendes on “The Masked Singer,” where he got unmasked as Astronaut.

He told People that while he has been influenced by the country music genre, his musical tastes are broader than that.

“There’s a lot more that I’ve always listened to and loved, and my job as an artist is to bring everything into my music,” Hayes said. “Obviously a large part of my life has been country-influenced, but there’s a lot of other influences, especially on this new music. The things that excite me and things that moved me, I want to bring that into my music. I want people to hear what my heart is made of.”

And among the things that moved him is the music of Mendes. It’s apparently a mutual admiration society, as Mendes has previously revealed that he listens to Hayes’ music. The two have even traded Instagram nods in past years.
