Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz from “I Love Lucy” were seemingly different in a lot of ways.
Even in “I Love Lucy” their characters exaggerate how different personalities and lives can still have a loving relationship.
However, behind-the-stage it was differences and arguments that would eventually lead them to get divorced in 1960. The one thing they’d always have in common is a dedication to their two kids, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.
Lucie Arnaz is now 69 and has spent her life working as an actress, singer, producer, and a lifeline to Lucille Ball’s legacy. The way she continues to live her life proves a few very similar qualities she has with both Desi and Lucy.
Traits Lucie Arnaz Got From Parents
In a Television Academy interview from 2016, Lucie Arnaz shared some of the traits she possesses that her parents installed in her.
“I’m a really good mix of my mom and my dad I think. I think I have my mother’s responsibility. She was a list maker, check off the list, get this done…I’m like that too to a fault,” Arnaz said.
Lucille Ball was a fierce, in-charge, and driven woman. She ran her own production company and had become a major figure in the television landscape during her life. Even on set, she was strict in making sure people would deliver their lines correctly to make “I Love Lucy” what it was.
While she was clearly responsible, she was also fun and clearly hilarious. Desi Arnaz, on the other hand had an absolute love and carelessness toward life, sometimes to a fault.
“I have my dad’s ‘joy de vivre,’ which is the French word for Cuban fun. He always just had a love of life and a great sense of humor, a twisted sense of humor. His music, I have a lot of music in my life and I sort of turned to that later in life and he had a great business sense, I think I’m a pretty good business person because I think like he does…he also used to say if you don’t know what to do, don’t do anything, which sounds ridiculous but it actually served me very well in my life,” Lucie Arnaz said.
Overall, she soaked up a lot of the qualities packed into her parents. She also soaked up their talent. In the mid-70s she branched out to a number of television roles. She even had her own show, “The Lucie Arnaz Show” briefly. She has also had a very extensive career in musical theatre. This includes shows like “The Witches of Eastwick,” “The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True,” and “Lost in Yonkers.”
‘I Love Lucy’ Upcoming Movie
A movie is being created that is a drama focused on the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. It’s called “Being the Ricardos” and is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin.
Nicole Kidman is Lucille Ball in the film. That decision received a lot of criticism from fans, as well as excitement from others.
Amidst the controversy, Lucie Arnaz stood up for the casting of the movie. She has always played a very active role in any stories or media involving her late parents. At the end of the day, the movie is more of a dramatic look at the actors behind-the-scenes, not Ricky and Lucy from “I Love Lucy.”
“There seems to be a lot of discussion about Nicole Kidman. It should be Debra Messing. It should be Carole Cook, I don’t know. Here’s the deal. You should understand. We are not doing a remake of I Love Lucy … It’s the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo, and her husband, Dezi Arnaz, my dad, not Ricky Ricardo. There will be humor in the film, but it is a story of the two of them and how they met and what went right with finding the show, what went wrong, their relationship, their love affair,” Arnaz said, according to People, back in February.
The movie should be out around this time next year.
