During a recent interview, Jackass star Sean McInerney got emotional when opening up about a shark stunt that went horribly wrong.
As part of the Discovery Channel’s annual “Shark Week” celebrations, they teamed up with some of the guys from Jackass. McInerney, also known as “Poopies,” stepped up when asked to film a stunt in shark-infested waters. He figured since he was a surfer, not much could go wrong with the stunt, but that’s where he was mistaken.
The idea of the stunt was a play on Happy Days character Fonzie’s famous jumping the shark scene. The famous scene on the classic television show had Fonzie (Henry Winkler) decked out in his typical leather jacket while skiing. While casually skiing he jumps a shark without breaking a sweat and is surrounded by his friends who congratulate him on his daredevil feat.
However, when the guys from Jackass tried to recreate the famous TV scene, a worst-case scenario occurred. As McInerney attempted the stunt on a wakeboard, the jet ski pulling him didn’t speed up fast enough. As he hit the ramp in the water, his slow pace made him land right on top of about 10 large Caribbean reef sharks. Almost immediately, one of the sharks attacked McInerney. The huge fish bit into his hand and almost severed it in half. The Jackass actor admitted he was scared for his life throughout the ordeal, and teared up while recalling the terrifying experience.
‘Jackass’ Star Admits He Thought He ‘Was Going to Die’
In the 30 years of “Shark Week” events on the Discovery Channel, no one has ever been bitten by the ocean predators. Leave it to the cast of Jackass to break that streak. While some of the cast members poke fun of McInerney and the stunt in the clip, they also clearly show concern for its aftermath.
For McInerney, he too was able to make light of the incident at first. But once he began talking about the attack itself, the emotional toll of the situation took over.
“When I landed in that shark pit, I thought I was going to die. There was like 10 sharks around me, and um,” the Jackass star said before pausing and getting emotional. “So there was like 10 sharks around me, and I was trying to swim out. And I couldn’t. I couldn’t swim out, dude. I knew I got bit. When I got bit I thought I was going to get attacked by like six more sharks. And luckily I didn’t. I just got my hand bitten.”
The stunt went horribly wrong, but McInerney knows the bad situation could’ve been even worse. Thankfully for him, and everyone involved, they were able to get him to safety without further injury. He has a long road to recovery for his partially severed hand to heal properly. Yet considering the circumstances, McInerney knows he’s lucky to be alive.
“Scariest thing of my life. Couldn’t really see much, I was in shock. I kind of lifted [my hand] up, and right when I lifted it up, it freakin’ fell over. That’s when I knew I was in trouble. And that’s when I knew I was probably going to die right now. But luckily I didn’t, and I just got bit once,” a teary-eyed McInerney added.
