James Bond actress Lana Wood recently revealed why she ended her fling with Sean Connery. Lana, who is the younger sister of Natalie Wood, played Bond girl Plenty O’Toole in the 1971’film Diamonds Are Forever. She recently wrote a memoir called Little Sister which details her life in Hollywood.
Wood recently spoke with Fox about what it was like to work with Connery, and why their fling ended.
When they first started working together, the two knew each other from other projects. This was great for Wood, who was nervous about starting out.
“I knew Sean. “I had met him years ago. My boyfriend at the time was [film producer] Jerome Hellman who was friends with Sean. We were invited to dinner at his house and I remember him being fun. He was very magnetic. He was very charismatic and we just had a terrific evening. I felt so comfortable with him,” she told the outlet. “I was completely at ease.”
Therefore, when it was her first day working on James Bond, Wood was thrilled to have a buddy.
“When I saw Sean walking through the lobby on the first day on set, I was delighted. I was a nervous wreck so I felt like I at least had one friend,” she said.
The Two ‘James Bond’ Actors Ended the Fling Mutually
“At the time I had a really lovely relationship with Leslie Bricusse,” she recalled. “Leslie had gone back to London. And I just felt that I really had to tell Sean that this relationship would not continue because I was very much in love with Leslie Bricusse.”
So that meant Wood had to make the tough call of talking to Sean Connery about her love back home.
“I thought Sean was absolutely wonderful, but I couldn’t see him anymore. I had to tell him. So when I told him, he said, ‘I understand completely.’ And that was it. We were in the hallway leading to the casino getting ready to shoot. And I walked away. I finished the take and then went back to hair and makeup,” she said.
Thankfully, it looks like the exchange went well. But as she reflects on those years, she mentioned that it’s probably because Connery wasn’t expecting anything either.
“I just needed him to know,” Wood continued. “And then many years later, all of a sudden, it dawned on me. He probably thought, ‘What a silly girl! Of course, we weren’t going to have a relationship.’ I just thought it was funny that I had to say something to him. ”
Lana Wood still has wonderful things to say about Sean Connery and their fling while filming James Bond. Thankfully, it ended mutually and no one got hurt in the process.
