In her book, Jenna Hager recalls a family dinner at which President George HW Bush sat sandwiched between her and Barbara. It was Barbara’s wedding day, and the family had gathered at the Bush compound in Kennebunkport, Maine to celebrate.
According to People magazine, Bush turned to Barbara and said, “You have never been more beautiful.” Those would be the last words he spoke to her.
The exploits of the high-achieving Bush family form the subject of the collected essays in Hager’s new book. It covers not just the Bushes but also the Welches, Hager’s maternal grandparents. Hager also unloads about motherhood, opening up about her own shortcomings and imperfections.
But Hager is no stranger to accomplishment. The author of “Sisters First” and “Ana’s Story” is also a Today show co-host and editor-at-large for Southern Living magazine. The New York Times has pronounced her “a force in publishing.”
Her new book explores some of the growing pains she experienced along the way, according to AARP magazine. It recounts how her grandparents, including HW Bush, were always there to help her out, offering song lyrics and Shakespeare quotes as inspiration.
The title of the book is a reference to the Bible — Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
