‘Jeopardy!’: The Advice Joe Buck Received From His Family Before Guest Hosting Gig

by Chris Haney

During an exclusive Jeopardy! interview, Joe Buck opened up about the advice his family gave him ahead of his first guest host appearance tomorrow.

On Monday, Buck begins his one-week stint on the popular game show. From August 9 to August 13, the longtime FOX Sports announcer is stepping up to the Jeopardy! lectern. He’ll be the 16th and final interim since host Alex Trebek passed away in November 2020. Following Buck’s appearance, showrunners are expected to announce the game show’s next permanent host.

As the sportscaster geared up to tape his Jeopardy! episodes, his family gave him some advice. Buck revealed that he received suggestions from almost all the members of his family. That includes his wife, his two daughters, and his sister who all told him to “relax and have fun.”

“All members of my family,” Buck said when asked about who gave him advice before hosting Jeopardy!. “From my wife to my sister to my two daughters just said relax and have fun and be yourself. At the end of the day, I mean that’s really all I came in here with is my knowledge of how television works. And then trying to apply that knowledge to how the game works from that side of the podium instead of from my couch.”

Additionally, he added what has been the most rewarding part of the guest-hosting gig so far.

“Being able to do it, and have some fun along the way, that’s been the most rewarding part too is to actually get there at times up there where I feel comfortable and I feel like myself. Getting that chance, it took a little bit to settle in, but I feel like I’m getting there.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Joe Buck Reveals He Was in ‘Awe’ of Alex Trebek’s Skill

While speaking during the same interview, Buck revealed details about his appreciation for iconic Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. He said he was literally “in awe” of Trebek’s hosting skills.

Even before he taped his one-week stint on the game show, Buck had great respect for Trebek’s work. Yet ever since he recorded his five episodes, the broadcaster has gained a new and even “greater appreciation” for the late host. He called Trebek “meticulously awesome” and complimented his impressive hosting skills over his almost four-decade Jeopardy! career. During a segment of the interview, Buck went into further detail about what he admired most about Trebek.

“I’ve been in television for almost 30 years,” Buck said. “And I always was in awe of the job that Alex did hosting this show. I think the ease with which he guided contestants through questions, the smile, the warmth, the intellect that came through.”

“When somebody said, ‘Hey, would you want to fill in as a guest host?,’ Yes, was my answer. And it was quick, because you know, it’s something new for me, it’s a challenge,” he continued.

“And now that I’ve been inside the studio, I have an even greater appreciation for how meticulously awesome Alex Trebek was,” Buck made sure to add.
