Alex Trebek was perhaps the greatest game show host of all time. Certainly, others vie for that title. But, the late Jeopardy! host brought an inspiring charisma to the game show. It was a new injection of energy to the world of game shows and one that has been attempted to be replicated ever since.

In an interview from 2008 with the CBC, Trebek sat down with George Strombo to discuss the game show. The legendary host and interviewer talked about a lot of things in the interview. In particular, the two talked about how difficult the show is.

To be a contestant on Jeopardy! is a challenging thing. You need to know surface-level things about a whole variety of life. You also need to know more in-depth details about so many things. That is one of the many reasons that the show is so popular. It showcases some of the great minds in a unique and interesting way.

During the interview, Strombo asked Trebek to talk about how hard the questions are. His response was well-composed and also quite hilarious.

“Some of [the questions] are very, very difficult,” Trebek explained in the interview. “A lot of them have to do with things that most people would know something about—Canadian history, American history, show business. We have more entertainment clues nowadays. I would do terribly poorly in a program that featured current music.”

Alex Trebek Explained That He Would Do Terribly in a Music Category on “Jeopardy!”

“I don’t know the difference between the Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men—none of that,” The audience erupted in laughter, but Trebek carried on with his hilarious quip. “I tell people that my music education ended when Frank Sinatra died. So that’s a long time ago.”

“I’m in this netherworld,” the legendary Jeopardy! host moved his hand across the front of his body.

Consequently, Strombo asked Trebek what kind of music he listens to know. He asked if the game show host only listens to Frank Sinatra now.

“I listen to some of the music that’s out there. But, most of the time, I listen to stuff that is of interest to me, and that goes back. There’s one Canadian performer named Jessie Cook, who’s a great guitarist. And one of the joys of coming to Toronto is that I can go to the record stores and pick up CDs. I got two this time that I didn’t have.”

Trebek then explained that things like that interest him. The late Jeopardy! host said that the music nowadays is not appealing to him. So, he said that he would likely stick only to things that pique his interest.

Sadly, Alex Trebek passed away on November 8, 2020.
