After a brief stint as the guest host of the heavily popular game show “Jeopardy!” Dr. Sanjay Gupta has returned to his role as a medical correspondent.

Like so many others are doing today, the former “Jeopardy!” guest host is remembering the events of 9/11. Gupta has a much different story and perspective than most people do of that horrific day. As a correspondent for CNN, Gupta was on the ground near the World Trade Center just moments after the chaos began. As a medical correspondent for the network, Gupta’s assignment was to collect the perspective of medical professionals. It couldn’t have been easy for the journalist with all that was happening around him. Gupta held firm and was able to deliver authenticity to the reports because of his background as a Neurosurgeon.

On Saturday, the “Jeopardy!” alum took to social media to share his thoughts on that fateful day. It is clear to see that the memories of the 9/11 attack have stuck him — as it has with millions of Americans. He says many heroes emerged on that day, showing the strength of unity amidst a heinous attack on freedom.

“20 years later, I can still remember standing on the streets of a city cloaked in grief,” he says in his tweet. “My assignment was to report from St. Vincent’s Hospital where doctors fought to save lives. Today, I choose to remember those heroes.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Guest Host Shares 9/11 Experience

Many social media users used the former “Jeopardy!” host’s tweet as a starter to share their 9/11 experience. Others responded to the tweet by thanking Gupta for his unwavering courage in collecting and reporting vital information in a chaotic scene. From the responses, it’s clear that the events of 9/11 are very much still on the minds of the American people.

“So hard to believe it’s been 20 years,” a Twitter user says in the comment Seems like yesterday! I will never forget!”

“Your’s was a familiar and kind face then,” another says. “That was you on my screen!”

“May you be blessed for all you’ve done and will continue to do,” another post proclaims. “So much respect for you Dr. Gupta, here in England.”

Gupta’s “Jeopardy!” hosting tenure came earlier this year and he did a commendable job behind the host’s podium. Much the same as other guest hosts, he was given two weeks to show what he could do. It isn’t known if he was a candidate for the permanent hosting gig. During his “Jeopardy!” guest-hosting stint, he was able to raise a nice chunk of change for his charity. The show donated more than $230,000 to his charity of choice, Odyssey. He says he will look back fondly upon his guest-hosting opportunity.

“After all these years, the most magical thing about ‘Jeopardy!’ is it brings my three teenage girls together almost every evening,” he said in a social media post earlier this year. “Thanks for the honor of these past two weeks. I will never forget them.”
