Come April 19, “Jeopardy!” will have it’s sixth guest host in the form of famed CNN journalist Anderson Cooper. While filming his episodes, Cooper, a self-professed “fan since high school,” detailed the first – and last – conversations he ever had with the late, great Alex Trebek.

“I remember the first time I was on “Jeopardy!,” Cooper begins with a huge smile. “And I was so excited to meet Alex Trebek.”

Who wouldn’t be? Cooper was, by all accounts, absolutely star-struck by the beloved host.

“And I remember when he walked on the stage, I was like… There was just something about seeing him – and I’ve met a lot of famous people – but for some reason, he was somebody who was just such an integral part of my entire life!”

For CNN’s most celebrated journalist, Trebek was a huge part of his “youth and growing up.” So the opportunity to “be back on the show from time to time,” too, was the honor of a lifetime for Cooper.

The Last Conversation “Jeopardy!”s Alex Trebek and Anderson Cooper Held

His appearances on the game show, and congruent success in journalism, would lead to a strong bond and friendship between the two figureheads – and a turn on “Celebrity Jeopardy!” In light of this, Cooper then details the last conversation with Alex Trebek he would ever have. His expression and tone immediately change as he looks down to compose himself.

“I got a call from him, probably about a month or two before he died,” Cooper continues with a longing smile. “And… he was asking me about some other stuff, but I used it as an opportunity just to say to him how much I appreciated him and how much, you know… All what he had brought to my life and to the life of so many people… So I was really glad I got the chance to do that,” he concludes.

“I miss him, as does everybody,” the “Jeopardy!” guest host laments. “Whoever leads the show forward, they’re certainly big shoes to fill. And I know whoever becomes the host of the show, they’re gonna carry on Alex’s legacy.”

Cooper continues his praise of both Trebek and the legacy of “Jeopardy!” in the interview, praising it as “one of the few things” families can do together that’s “intelligent and educational, and fun and exciting!”
