Iconic quiz show “Jeopardy!” keeps rolling along utilizing celebrity guest hosts in the absence of longtime host Alex Trebek.
Trebek’s passing late last year left a massive void to fill on “Jeopardy!” Sensing that Trebek’s shoes would be tough to fill, “Jeopardy!” officials sought out famous celebrities from different walks to act as hosts. The show will continue utilizing celebrities as hosts for the remainder of the current season or until a permanent host is found. Big names such as Ken Jennings, Aaron Rodgers, and Dr. Mehmet Oz have all taken turns hosting the game show.
The latest guest host to complete their tenure as “Jeopardy!” host is Anderson Cooper and the returns are – not great. During his first week on the show, “Jeopardy!” managed only a 5.1 on the Nielsen rating scale, according to The Wrap. That number gives Cooper the lowest rating among all of the guest hosts so far. The ratings for Cooper’s second week are not yet available so a final tally cannot be determined at this time. Dr. Oz also took a 5.1 Nielsen score during his two weeks, so Cooper’s final week will determine if he gets the worst final score.
‘Jeopardy!’ Ratings Reveal Fan Favorite Among Hosts
Either way, it looks like Cooper will land in the lower half of guest host popularity scores. Some experts suggest Cooper’s low rating could have been impacted by the interest and coverage of the Derek Chauvin Trial.
To this date, Ken Jennings has had the top ratings of all the “Jeopardy!” guest hosts, pulling in a 6.0 on the Nielsen scale. Jennings’ success as host comes as no surprise as he was expected to be a “Jeopardy!” fan favorite and could get major consideration for the full-time gig. In second place is “Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards with a highly respectable 5.9 Nielsen rating. NFL star quarterback Aaron Rodgers falls into third place with a 5.6 ratings score. Journalist Katie Couric currently sits in fourth place with a 5.5 Nielsen rating.
The “Jeopardy!” guest-hosting gig is currently in the hands of journalist Bill Whitaker, who began his reign on Monday. His shift will end next Friday when “Jeopardy!” moves into its yearly Tournament of Champions. Former tournament champion Buzzy Cohen will handle hosting responsibilities during the tournament. Actress Mayim Bialik will begin her hosting tenure upon completion of the annual tournament.
